I'm not so sure that's the case. The one exception would be computers connected wireless where you would have to first run the set up on the PC that's attached to the router. You can check the How To: Setting up a home network at http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...9265e1033.mspx

Right...which is what occurred. Router connected to XP box, set up run there. Then, on the Vista laptop, ran the process which has an option that says something like "I want to share the internet connection that was set up on that computer over yonder". Ok, it didn't exactly use those words, but it meant that. So, that pretty much implies to me that the "main" connection is the one over yonder, not this new one.

So what would happen if you connect the laptop (Vista) to the router, run the network set up, save the wireless network settings to a USB drive, unplugged the laptop and run the set up from the USB drive?

Other than me throwing both computers out of the window? Honestly, I don't know. I just spent several hours trying the last thing linked to here, and that didn't work either. Basically, I give. He'll have to call the local computer repair shop to come take care of it for him. My stress level has reached its peak on this one.

Question XP desktop can't access Vista laptop

I have an XP desktop and Vista laptop. I'm networked with a secured wireless router (high-speed cable connection).

I can use the Vista laptop to view all files on the XP and use the XPs printer. I cannot do the reverse. What, in Vista, is keeping me from accessing these things?
