Defrag problem

Vista Home Prem., HP Dv 9008nr, 1.6 Ghz Dual Core, 1500 Ram, 100GB Hard Drive

When I run the Defrag it runs but never finalizes. I tried to run from safe mode and it wont even start. Any ideas? Thanks

Try running the defrag from cmd prompt. Atleast that way you can tell us where it gets stuck Remember it can take a while. The new defrag ystem is meant to run in the background and should effect your PC performance that much. How long have you kept it running for and what hard drive do you have connected?

JoshW02@hotmail.co.uk agrees: ExtraInfo: Did you know the XP defrag prog could tell you what % it was at but Vista's can't! lol

My hard drive is a Fujitsu MHV2100BH PL SCSI. Im not sure what CMD Promt is or how to use it? I let degrag run about 12 hours and since it doesnt show you the prgress I had no idea if it was froze up or not.

Start -> All programs -> Accessories... right click command prompt and 'Run as Administrator'. Once it opens up type defrag C: -a to see how fragmented the drive is. Once that completes, if you want to defragment the drive type defrag C: -w (you can also use -v to show more information during defrag). To get more information on the defrag -? command just type defrag and it will show you all of the extensions.

to follow up on Crabbys suggestion, turnoff your Antiviris program, they normally recheck the movement of files ... that also will cause the defrag to restart and finally hang... (PS: that means no internet connection also).
and some Firewalls will also make Defrag hang & restart .

And I might add it works very well also... Currently I have tested and use weekly with NO noticeable problems....
