Disc Drive not working correctly and constant crashes

Hi, I've been using Windows Vista since June and the amount of problems just keep increasing over time

My PC specifications are available here

My first problem is the disc drive, it's an "ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L" and it used to work perfectly. But after a few weeks it simply won't respond. I've managed to narrow down the cause and effects, I can still burn CD/DVDs, the only problem is that it won't read the disc (unless I force it to). I have followed this guide (except step 5) to try and get it working, but to no avail.

I can't explore the disc and whenever I try to, Vista always asks if I want to format the disc. I've found that if I right click on the drive icon and select search, the files appear (and right clicking on there gives an option to go to the file location - which works). So clearly the drive still works, I've run all the diagnostics I could on it and it also states that it is working perfectly. All my drivers are up to date too. Also command prompt works on the disc so I don't know why explorer doesn't want to look at it

Also my second problem is that Vista constantly crashes, it seems to be completely random, I've tried to narrow it down but it just doesn't want to reoccur (they say lightning doesn't strike the same place twice!). I believe it may be caused by the disc drive as well, but can't be sure. 90% of the time when booting up the PC it fails and allows me to do a system restore, which does nothing at all (but waste my time), after three or four times of failing and declining system restore it boots up fine (disc drive still not working correctly though).

Also while I'm complaining, I have Unreal Tournament 2004 and it won't install, every time it says that the disc is scratched or something and won't continue. I installed it on my other PC (which has Windows XP) and it installed flawlessly. I even copied the discs and tried installing, but the same error occured! Lastly I even made .iso images of them and tried to install it via daemon tools on a virtual drive, but the same error popped up! I managed to get the game running though - after copying all the files from the XP install onto Vista and it plays fragtastic now Don't know why that happens too

If you need more information, it's no problem. I just hope these issues can be resolved

oh and I've tried HP support and they completely failed to help at all, very useless

Thanks for your time

Wink CD gone usually helps.

one problem at a time... this problem has existed since Win95 at times, it appears. I have found many times it corrects the problem.
This is due to a program related to DVD/CD corrupts the registry by adding crap.

1. open Control panel --> find device, --> find driver, click uninstall Driver..
2. open notepad copy and paste the following.
Quote:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdr4_2K]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdralw2k]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdudf]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\UdfReadr]
then save as "CD_gone.bat" then apply.

next is Reboot, and allow Vista to complete reset CD entrys and install the recommended driver...

Let us know if this works and solves your CD/DVD problem.

This might also solve your boot problem... if Vista can not find the required device then it (like earlier versions of Windows- freaks out).

I personally think your issue is hardware related and not Vista. It could be RAM or CPU related, but difficult to say without looking at the PC. Not familiar with HP BIOS system, but you may try starting the PC and running the PC using the BIOS default setting. Most PCs have high and low BIOS settings, if it runs fine under low BIOS settings, there’s probably an issue with RAM, CPU or Motherboard. Again, hard to say without actually looking at the PC, but give that a try, specially if your PC is still under warranty.

Snuffy: I tried that and it didn't work, I still get the same errors

felix8406: I tried searching for any BIOs options, but couldn't find how to change the settings for it :\

Any other ideas?

Wink

OK, thanks for trying, sorry it did not work. next I recommend you get FREE-Belarc and save the file as .txt, then you can open with notepad... removed the KEYS, then post so we can see what programs might be installed that are known to conflict with CD/DVD players or Vista ... since your player is RATED: works with Vista..
Have you installed any Beta versions of SP1?
The BIOs setting have 1 for default (low) no tweaking - and 1 that tweaks (high) your system.

You can download the entire .txt here.

I haven't installed SP1 yet, saw it released today but I read that Windows Update will get it next week or so for some reason, so I'm waiting for it to download automatically.

I checked in the BIOs settings and nothing there to change it :\

Question

Very long list, still checking but it will take me some time... what I need you to do, is open control panel --> windows updates --> view the installed updates... look for compatibility and stability updates... click and view details. see if any refer to DVD-CD players. The reason is your players are listed as "work with Vista" which means that any compatibility update can kill your device...

This is part of the plan with 3rd party manufactures to help them sell new items if they play ball with MS and do not UPDATE drivers for there older items.
DVD-CD players are among the kill devices, printers-scanner-fax machines also many Routers are also getting the KILL switch.
What you might try also is find your device and turnoff DEP for it, or try changing to WinXP compatibility mode.
------------------------------------
Disabling Data Execution Prevention (DEP)
Data Execution Prevention is a security feature that can be a bit of a pain at times. Often things will simply appear not to run at all; hopefully you will notice a bubble from the taskbar letting you know that DEP is the cause. If Vista (and actually this has been around since Windows Server 2003) sees that a process is being spawned that "could" be unwanted, DEP shuts it down. This is especially common in some application installations: if a Windows Installer setup (MSI) calls an executable in Vista, DEP could very well put a stop to it. If you are trying to run an installation or other executable being stopped by DEP, it could save you some trouble so turn it off while you attempt to give it another shot…

Run a command prompt as administrator. From the start menu, select "All Programs", then "Accessories" and right-click on the "Command Prompt" shortcut and choose "Run As Administrator". From here you can use the following command to disable Data Execution Prevention (DEP) with the following command:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff

Keeping your command prompt open, run your setup or other process being stopped by DEP. Then, to turn it back on again, do the same and run the following:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn

Found nothing directly related to CD/DVD drives, but these were close:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938194
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941649 < mentions an interesting bug with the update

I've disabled DEP now, disc drive still not responding like it used to :\

Question

Have you tried the most common way to fix? Open devices under control panel, locate the device and uninstall it...then reboot and let Vista reinstall it.
if for some reason something got corrupt or mixed, normally this will correct.
Vista installs DEFAULT signed drivers for the CD-DVD player..

I think his best bet is to contact HP. Like I mentioned an a previous post, there are possible hardware issues. If the PC still under warranty, my suggestion is to have it check and hopefully fix before the warranty runs out. I have experienced similar issues on some PCs and the problem has been either motherboard, CPU or RAM.

I'm not saying that's the issue here, but there are possibilities. If that's the case, it must be taken care of now because it could get a lot worst.
