Recently my disc drive keeps disappearing at random times and for no reason. It is so annoying because to fix it I have reboot everytime and even then sometimes it still doesn't work. Can anyone explain why this is happening?

| I could be many things; software or hardware related. If it disappears, go to device manager and see if there are any issues there. Try uninstalling the hardware through device manger and restart PC; Vista should reinstall it after it restart. Verify all connections to ensure everything is tight; disconnect and reconnect all cables.

| I suddenly started loosing 3 HDDs for no apparent reason... 1. check during boot to insure all were being seen....OK 2. checked during Boot to insure all HDD's were 100% on Bios.....OK 3. this might happen two or 3 times a day or maybe not at all. 4. I started with REFLASHing the BIOS with the current set I was using. then reset all setting during bios boot, and set proper method to detect. (seems that SP1 or some SP1 upgrade) had to do with RAID and Vista... this setting was changed so as to see RAID, since I have NO RAID, I reset to SATA w/o Raid... problem is gone...and I have not lost any HD's again...

| I've experienced the same, suddenly one of my three HD's disappeares. Don't know what's causing this, maybe SP1? This issue is something of the last couple of days, but there haven't been any hardware changes or (OS-)updates on my system last week, so.... |

| Well I have only experienced this problem with SP1 Beta, so maybe if I reinstall Vista and see how it gets on without SP1. It is just probably that, if it isn't though I got big problems... ![]()

| I do have SP1 installed at the moment so I'll try using the drive without it. Thanks Guys, I'll get back to you when I know if it is working or not.

| Instead of uninstalling SP1 I just thought it would be better just to start from scratch, so I loaded the disc drive with my Vista disc and guess what? It booted straight to my Hard Drive even though the BIOS has been set for the disc drive to have boot priority first so I thought I would restart again and the same thing happened again, so I checked the BIOS and it didn't detect the disc drive...brilliant! But the third time on rebooting it booted from the disc so there is obviously a loose connection somewhere in the disc drive. I thought this problem was a bit weird as I remembered installing SP1 before and not having this problem then so...yeah gonna have to take my laptop into PC World tomorrow as it is still under guarantee. I'm not gonna trust meself to fix the drive as I'm a software person not hardware. ![]()
