Sounds like your shop believes they have provided restore media with your PC. Is there a DVD that came with it? When you try and install Vista, can you simply not pass the point where you can enter the product key? If so, you can skip that section by not entering a key and have vista for 30 days while you try and sort out the issue with your retailer.

Most stores do not ship a DVD, they use OEM (image) copy and place a RESTORE image on a hidden partition on the HD...this bypasses the need to use a "KEY". As he so mentioned the KEY

is pasted on the side of the Computer...(Hince) supereasy to "Pirate" and somebody used the "KEY" for FREE. My question is when you state it and "will not work" do you mean it will not activate? Reason your KEY has been stolen due to sloppy store policys.

You can call MS, and with the sales receipt and lots of "complaining" have your KEY replaced or activated over the phone...
It only took me 2 hours yesterday to get a NEW KEY and replacement DVD from a "Local Seller" they used a OEM KEY and NO RESTORE DISK or RESTORE Partition..

Call Future Shop again and ask them how to reboot using the original product image. Also, as others suggested, contact Microsoft and explain to them that you do have a Genuine Key. They should be able to activate it in your PC.

With regards to restore image partitions... I was under the impression you needed some media to access it? Can you just direct boot?

As long as you hold the EULA license agreement, Microsoft should be able to help, and if not go shoot up future shop (or return the PC).

Some restore partitions don't require anything but being booted to the OS, but others not true. In the first case, I am not sure if one can do a restore by booting to just any old DVD/CD--e.g., an XP CD. And, his restore partition may be a goner if he can't currently boot. Bad news, bad service, bad system, bad luck.

I would insist on returning the machine for full credit and bypass the whole issue for now and forever. You, canadianbacon, have been dealt a hand that you should not have been dealt. Sorry for the unfortunate circumstances, and welcome regardless, of course.
