I had that issue with a game I had (black screen during game cinematics) and was simple to fix. I did not have a DX9 installed because I thought that DX10 would be better to use. Did not realize it did not work that way. It may seem stupid, but make sure you have DX9 and it is up to date.

Yeah... once I used dx5 for a dx3 game (Curse of Monkey Island) and the whole 10 minutes intro completed in about 6 seconds!
