having issues with shut down

I just bought a new Dell with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. Lately when I go to shut down one of two things happens. It simply does not shut down or for some reason it reboots.

Any suggestions as tow what I should be looking at?

One issue may be a USB device connected to the PC. Try removing all USB devices and give it a try. If not, get back to us. This issue has been previously discussed here in this forum. We can do some search and see what was the solution.

Please check the shutdown command as well. In the command prompt type shutdown -s and if it doesnt shutdown then you have an installation issue and need to repair. Check that and we can tell you how to sort it if its the problem.

I have a card reader, printer, a DVD burner and video capture device connected via USB. I have a feeling it's the card reader and it's giving me fits anyways as it reads only half the time so I'll start with that one.

If you use lots of USB devices, make sure your device is plugged into the correct slot... many USB 2 devices fail on USB 1 slots, and vis versa, even tho they are "forward/backward compatible" that is hogwash...also make sure your USB ports have the latest drivers.

Smile delete and reboot for Vista (WDDM) drivers

Not exactly sure I understand correctly, but your having Dell Driver problems?
OK it is very easy.
1. find the drivers via control panel, and devices....
2. delete ea driver that you think is causing the problem.
2a. there might be more than 1 - so yes delete them all.
3. now reboot, via the start orb --> type or you can copy paste
C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00

that is simply the fastest way to (restart) shutdown -r (restart) -t (00= no delay do it now).
ea Driver will be installed via (WDDM) or official Vista Drivers, not Beta drivers but signed drivers that Vista (MS) prefers - not Dell or HP or NVidia but Vista..

Video drivers are not the same as USB drivers...OEM is different than Retail

I used the command prompt and it worked. I haven't had time to do much else with the PC as the better half has been on it alot lately. Time to see if the "standard" shut down method works.
