Well - now that I have most of my software installed, I find that of my 3Gigs of memory 1+Gig is in constant use. What would be the proper way to identify and reduce the useage? I've discovered a Vista app to identify programs at startup, but I'm not sure how to determined if I can disable. Anyone have any insight. ![]() |

| What app are you using? The issue you raise is always the issue. What to disable? No one every seems to have a good answer. I know I don't. And, I assume you are talking about process not installed programs. Do you see any processes that individually are using large amounts of RAM? I don't, except that Firefox takes about 140,000k.

| I would worry if it was the other way around, where instead of Vista using all available RAM, it would have too much free space. This would be wasted memory space. Let’s not forget about Vista’s memory management or SuperFetch. It’s a learning utility that does it best to understands which applications you use the most and then pre-loads these applications into memory so your system can response faster. It even learns which applications you use the most during a certain time of the day or day of the week. As opposed to Win XP that can leave up to 1GB of available RAM unused, Vista is designed to take full advantage of every available RAM. If when you load up an application there isn’t enough RAM left to execute the command, Vista will automatically free up RAM by sending some of the applications to a page file. I think Vista is much more efficient than its predecessors when it comes to memory usage and if it’s using all available memory, it’s actually a good thing. This is just my opinion by the way. |

| NICE to know information about Vista memory management. I keep the task manager open on my secondary monitory to view activity as I work and was concerned when I started importing video from my DVR and the memory useage grew to 2.8xxGbytes and the Page File had grown to over 3Gbytes as I reached the end of the tape. |

| I see. Check out this read on OS X: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.p...10613140025184. I have not yet seen a comparable Vista-related write up. But, I think that things must work pretty much the same way in Vista. Note that a major point is that available RAM is not much of a concern with OS X, and my take is that things are the same way in Vista. Read the whole thing as the best part comes later. The read discusses, in an OS X context, some of the things felix mentioned above.

| That's very good, I guess. Do you shut down often? I almost never do. I would think that not shutting down would decrease free memory over time--which should be good, at least to an extreme point, given the way SuperFetch probably works.
