I am regularly sent docs as e-mail attachments, which I print out, work on and fax back. Recently I have been asked to work onscreen, in which case one has to remember to use Save As in order to ensure that the doc is saved in Word. When working with XP I once clicked Save by mistake and had a big problem recovering the doc, which I eventually found by following a path to Temporary Internet Files. Now I am using Vista. Unfortunately the same thing has happened; late last night I just clicked Save and now the doc (hours of work) has vanished. By doing the same thing to another received attachment I have been sent and then clicking File>Properties I have managed to find the path, which is C:\[the name of my computer]\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\temporary internet files\content.IE5\WX2CTZ0N [the designation of the file] I end up with a long list of similar designations, some of which have yesterday’s date, but opening them in Word, Notepad or Wordpad just produces a blank page. I am in despair! Can anyone help? |

| I'm replying to myself because I have at last solved the problem. But in case anyone else has the same prob, here's the solution: In Windows Mail (horrible programme but that’s another story), open the attachment (mine are Word docs; presumably this would also work with, for instance, Excel). Select Save As which takes you to the temp files folder, and then Cancel. You’re still in Word and so now selecting File>Open will take you to the last place you accessed which will be that list of temp files. Click on the file you want to recover, and bingo... BUT IT SHOULD BE MORE STRAIGHTFORWARD! Last edited by alpinehermit : 10-14-2008 at 10:32 AM. Reason: just better wording |
