| You might try a reinstall of your sound... and see if that puts the icon back. find your sound under system, device manager and sound... delete and reboot... then under control panel. look for sound control and make sure it is configured correctly... also test and make sure the sound plays. Sometimes this will happen when you installed/updated to the wrong driver. By deleteing the current sound drivers and rebooting Vista will install the most current (WDDM) version.. Let us know if the answer is NO what is your sound device.

Thanks for your input. It got me to digging around. Went to control panel and sound and all was well. I have a new laptop and have been loading a bunch of 'stuff'. So I thought about any 'stuff' that would be sound related. I finally got to Rhapsody. (for my Sansa mp3 player) and in options I found a box called "Disable 'Start Navigation' sound" I unchecked it. Then I went back to properties of the task bar and went to the Notification Tray and found that the 'sound' box was no longer grayed out. Checked the box and the icon popped in! Thanks for your suggestions. It got me looking in the right direction. Are we having fun yet???????
