| As the title says.. my computer takes a very long time to boot. When it has finally booted it works fine. Its a new system. Virus-free. Ive been using it for a month or so and a few days ago it suddenly decided to take its time when booting. Ive tried system restore without luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you. |

| 1. you might try, disk clean and remove all the junk, which is normally collected, then remove all the unneeded RESTORE points. 2. I'd DEFRAG . after this is done... please let us know. the above programs come with Vista. so they are FREE ( sort of). if this does not help, we will need more info on your system. Belarc is FREE, and works great in Vista. but please save in notepad, so you can open it, remove all the KEYS (you paid for them and they need not be offered FREELY). this give lots of info on your system, and will save lots of questions. for the next step.

| Could you detail at what point it takes a long time? Is it when the green bar is up? If so does the bar continue to move... or stop? Have to got updated drivers? Could you detail what hardware you are using? There may be an underlying issue which has only just made itself known in your hardware. Have you done any diagnostic tests on your hardware? Like Memtest etc? crabby |

| It appears to be booting normally until right after the green bar, then i get a black screen for several minutes. Then i can see the vista logo appear slowly and the desktop appear (in many steps). The background is black for a moment (and a loading indicator for several minutes) and the computer just runs really slow right after everything has appeared on the desktop. When i start programs such as IE7 or open my computer they stop responding. The computer appears to run normally in a minute or two though. I have the latest drivers for just about everything. Im using intel core duo 6700. gf8800gtx, 4 gigs of ram and an Msi P35 platinum mobo. Ive tried defragging and disc cleaning as well as running belarc. belarc told me everything was fine etc. (im not very familiar with all the information it provided though and i dont know if its private or if its ok to post it). I have not done a memtest at the moment (dont know what it is). |

| What version of Vista are you running. Which type x86 or x64? If your running x86 - remove 1 stick of memory and lower it down to 3gb. if they are 2GB sticks. remove 1 stick and then test.... If x64 then download the patch which is needed to allow 4GB or more memory to work correctly.

| Its funny that it worked before and has worked for a month or so. But anyways, its 86x (at least it says so in the program files directory). so my only hope is to remove one of my precious gb sticks? And also, will there be a patch for this available in the future? Thanks for your help though, will try this in the morning. |

| As it goes, everybody I have read and understands says NO for x86 being able to use 4GB of memory. But it depends on how you READ the why they say NO.. but a patch seems very unlikely. (It is MS way to convert everybody to x64. which seems to be have problems. lots of info here. http://www.vistababble.com/forums/ha...html#post17115 You can read the info and form your own opinion.

| It may have been a driver upgrade through windows update? If so, try going to the nvidia website and grab the newest series 8 geforce drivers. Here's a link: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_162.22.html crabby |

| My computer can no longer boot (im using the family computer to write this), i only get a black screen and the power light on my monitor just blinks every couple of seconds. The computer still runs what appears to be normally, only there is nothing but the blackest blackness on my screen. I can not see any light on my mouse or keyboard though. I removed one stick of ram without luck (maybe this nothing-but-blackscreen problem is different, and your ram removal idea may have been able to fix the former problem of the computer just being extremely slow) . I have the latest geforce 8 drivers also (which i downloaded the first day i got this problem. Turns out i had already had them from the start.). I'll just take my computer to the guys that put it together tomorrow as im going away for the weekend anyways. All i can do is hope they fix my problem and have me up and running on monday, ill let you know then what turned out. Thanks again for your time. |

| The latest GeForce drivers are BETA... the drivers that MS offers and wants you to use is 1.6.22 they are stable, and 100% Vista Approved and Compatible. The drivers should be auto installed if you remove the video card and try to boot, which should fail.. only to show no Video... shut down... replace the card and it will find and install (WDDM) 1.6.22 drivers. Some tmes the file from NVidia is slightly different than MS (WDDM). If I install from NVidia it does not show (WDDM) if I use MS it shows (WDDM). And some times the BLACK Screen happens, I usually then simply REBOOT via the RESET button, if you do not have then turn off with the PSW switch. Bios gets pizzed when you remove memory.devices.. you can resolve that by enter into bios and let it check all setting... memory HDD's etc. then continue to boot. or you can reboot... Like every time I flash a BIOS (every system) I always recheck the settings, and make sure they are MY WAY...not default. I use SATA not RAID...
