Thanks Juggernaut, that worked to allow my mouse to wake the computer,

problem is....

it now appears the problem was not that I had nothing to wake the computer, because when I wake with the mouse it does the same thing as when I wake with the power button - starts up like it has been improperly shut down and none of my programs, etc. are still on.

Any idea about this?
