| I'm wondering if it is possible to network connect a Vista enabled computer to a laptop running XP? I have a DSL modem connected to a wireless router, and have been having a heck of a time trying to find a network connection method. HELP! Thanks in advance. Millstone |

| Are you doing this wired or wireless in Vista you have the network detection wizard and you have to be in the same work group ( like mshone etc)and you may have to run network wizard on the Xp system i haven't did this in a while and I have to think hard on how it is done but here is a link for issues in seeing the XP system in the Vista map that may help Network Map in Windows Vista does not display computers that are running Windows XP

| It should eb simple. Just connect the two devices to the network, have them on the same workgroup and then in the network and sharing center just allow network discovery, file sharing etc as per your wants. I have done it a load of times and it even shares with media devices. crabby |

| Yes, it should be easy, but you know about shouda coulda woulda. Addiing to what others have said. Be sure a folder on the XP is shared with "everyone" and that both sharing options are enable. On the Vista, share a folder with "everyone." In the Vista Networking and Sharing Center, besides making the machine network discoverable, you might need to with password protected sharing on or off. Be sure and turn File Sharing on. Post back with no workie still.

| Thanks again to all who have given advice (and hope). Using the patch, I was able to quickly recognize the XP Laptop on the Vista Desktop and access files on the laptop from the desktop. I'm having some difficulty doing the reverse, which is to have the XP laptop recognize the Vista desktop. I've tried the networking wizard to create a new network place, but I get hung up where it asks me to provide a new network address. Thanks in advance. |

| Yes, networking issues can be tricky. Have you done everything I mentioned above on the Vista machine: make machine discoverable, enable file sharing, try both password protected sharing and no? Also, I think I mentioned above, but be sure your files are shared with "everyone" and that your computers are in the same workgroup.

| Znod - I took your advice and actually followed each point of your earlier message and...it worked! I had password sharing enabled AND had conflicting workgroup names. With those things corrected, everything is great. Thanks again! Millstone |
