First we need to know if it's your camera or the USB port. Had you tried connecting any other USB devices to your PC? If the anser is no, then get a USB device and connect it and see if it works.

More info on your system also.
1. are your ports USB 1.1 for USB 2.0?
2. What is your camera? name model will help.
3. is it Vista-works or Vista compatible?

I can not find that the Sony VX2100 is compatible or even works in Vista. Using the HCL site.
http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Pro...id=302&sv=sony

from the Sony Site.. on the DCR-VX2100. It is still in Question.
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/news-i...&mdl=DCRVX2100
Here are some clips- but I suggest you review this site. READING VERY CAREFULLY. to see if you want to continue or take it back and get a Camera that is GUARANTEED to work.. in XP and Vista.
Quote:
The compatibility information for the Sony camcorders is broken into two parts, one for the camcorder itself and the other for the digital imaging software that came on the CD bundled with the camcorder. Please note that it is possible for the camcorder to be compatible with a computer running the Windows Vista operating system while the originally provided digital imaging software is not. -- The 64-bit starter version of the Windows Vista operating system is not supported. --- Not all Sony camcorders are compatible:
For compatible Sony camcorders - You should be able to connect your camcorder and transfer files to a computer running the Windows Vista operating system.
For non-compatible Sony camcorders - Operation with the Microsoft® Windows Vista™ operating system is not guaranteed.
Quote:
Software for the Camera is:
Picture Motion Browser Ver 1.1 - Picture Motion Browser Ver 2.0.01 – 2.0.06 - Picture Motion Browser Ver 2.1.00 – 2.1.01 Instructions: Some behavior may be different from that of the previous Windows XP operating system environment. *3
Please install the update program for Windows Vista.
Again its doubtful... Microsoft HCL says NO - Sony says Maybe

The two Camera's I can find that work are:
Home > Searching Digital Cameras & Video: Digital Cameras for "sony"

Windows Vista Hardware Compatibility List

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Narrow your selection by: Company
All Sony Corporation x86 Compatibility

Product Name Company x86 Compatibility x64 No Compatibility
VAIO CAMERA PCGA-VC1/A Sony Corporation Compatible
VAIO CAMERA PCGA-VC2 Sony Corporation Compatible

o thanks man. i came up with something tho. i have an external hard dirve and another computer in my basement. i was wondering if i took my external downstairs and uploaded all my footage onto there, then brought it back upstairs and edited it with Sony Vegas. Sony vegas works on my computer right now, would it work differently after i upload the footage onto it? thanks a bunch!

USB 1.0 is the older version USB port, while USB 2.0 is the newer version; but not so new. v2.0 was released in April 2000. So if you have a newer PC, you have 2.0. If you hear a sound when disconnecting your device, it means that there's a good connection. Try connecting it, click the Start button and click Computer; it might show in there.

If you can transfer your "footage" to an external hard drive and then connect the hard drive to your upstairs’ PC, that should work...as long as the hard drive is recognized.
