Not showing all available memory

I am running Vista Home Premeium 64 bit. With 4 gigs of ram, but my system only seems to see 3039 mb of ram. Is this what Vista should see? Is there a certain amount of ram used that wont show because my system uses it elsewhere?
My mobo bios is the stock version that came on disk. I havent upgraded because I am unsure I can update it without corruptions. Someone once told me not to update if it`s running well. I figured with my mobo software I could at least see if the ram is running in dual channel mode. Dont see that anywhere in my bios.

Sometimes your graphics card uses RAM as video memory, Try confiuring that with the Nvida driver software.

Thanks guys. Good to know info. I have all the correct hardware to work with the 64 bit version of Vista. So I should be able to show all 4 gigs of ram. I`ll see if I can contact my motherboard maker to see how my setting should be set at for this to work right.
