Possible issue Setting the XP compatibility Flag on an .exe

I have been reluctant to try to install an XP application using the technique of setting the compatibility flag of the .exe using Explorer to XP SP2, but I was unable to find a Vista release of the utility which came with my motherboard (ASUS) for monitoring the temps, voltages, and fan speeds so I thought I would give this a try.

I first tried it as delivered and it would not install because of the version of windows. I then set the compat flag and it installed with no complaints.

I then started it up and all went well. The temps/voltages/fan speeds were displayed as expected and within the range of what I expected.

HOWEVER: When I exited the utility the fan on my video card jumped to max speed and stayed there. Note that there is no monitoring of the video card in the application. I did a reboot and as soon as windows loaded, the fan on the video card again jumped to max speed.

I removed the software and rebooted the computer. Again the video card fan went to max. I then ran my registry cleaner which found a number of entries left behind by the install. As soon as I cleaned up the registry, the video card fan returned to normal speed.

It might be worthwhile to note that setting the compat flag for this type of application bears an additional risk which should be noted.

Znod is on a distinguished road

Hmmm??? Well, what I am glad about is that you fixed your problem without a bigger deal--e.g., a repair install.

I'm just curious; why did you exit the application in the first place? Isn't it supposed to stay on all the time? One more thing, did you notice any difference between the temp as reported by the BIOS and the one reported by the utility? Could there be a possibility of a conflict from the software and the BIOS temp protection parameters?

My PC uses a BIOS protection in which the fan will rev up to its max whenever the CPU is under a heavy load, or if I go to standby and then resume from it (standby) very quickly, or when quickly resuming from a power outage.

Felix - Actually it's not a diagnostic tool, but more of a look/see what the conditions are. It runs as a GUI and gathers the information from the BIOS. When I sign off it exits also. Similar to the BIOS health selection. And again let me point out that the application does not monitor the Graphics Card temp or fan, only the motherboard.

The graphics card utility is usually furnished by NVIDIA, but the software and drivers are not available for Vista from NVIDIA (at least not for my video card). I'm using the video drivers which came with Vista.

And I also have "Cool N Quiet" enabled on my motherboard. It does a great job of quieting the CPU/PWR SPLY/Chassis Fans when the computer is in a "resting" state.
