Problem installing a second sata drive

I currently have 1 sata drive which vista is installed on and working fine. I have bought a new maxtor diamondmax 21 sata drive and have connected the cables correctly, and removed the jumper. When i restarted the pc i checked the bios and the HD is detected as the 4th drive. (1st is dvd rom, 3rd is the drive vista is on, and the 4th is the new drive) When windows starts, it shows it has installed the drive and says it is ready to use. But the drive isnt in the list of other drives. I checked dev manager, and it is shown as working properly, but when i populate the volume stats, it says partition type not applicable. My Western Digital diagnostic tools shows it working as well, but does not list it with the other working drive. Im new to vista, and was wondering if anyone else has had a problem like this.

thanks

Can you find a way to format it NTFS--even if it already is formatted that way? Do you expect anything that you want to be on the drive? If no other way, maybe you could format it using your Vista disk assuming your have one. But, of course, I don't know if formatting would solve your problem.

the next part down from Dev Manager is Storage Management... you can use that to FORMAT the HDD. I also have Maxtor HDD, and it takes a Vista Driver to install correctly. Yes, it shows in Bios, Yes it shows in Device Manager, but I had to install a compatible Sata Driver for it to work correctly.

Make sure you have the plugs set correctly... Sata will not function if you have iti set to Sata II. Sata II can function as Sata, but not vice versa.

from Maxtor
Install a New (Second) SATA Drive in an Existing Windows Vista System

Confirm the computer is powered off.

Mount and connect the Serial ATA hard drive.
See here for an interactive flash tutorial illustrating this.

Boot up to Windows Vista.

Insert the CD/DVD/USB drive/floppy diskette that contains the drivers for the SATA controller/motherboard (or simply download them from the controller manufacturer's website) (if necessary).

Launch the drivers by double-clicking on them.

The drivers should install themselves.

Right-click on Computer.

Select Manage.

Select Disk Management.

Find the SATA hard drive, which should be denoted as "Disk 1" or similar.

Right-click on the box containing "Disk 1" or similar.

Choose Initialize. The drive box should now say "Ready" or "Online".

Right-click on the Unallocated Space to the right of this "Disk 1" box.

Select New Partition.

Follow the prompts to create and format the partition.

Jumpers and Cabling
Serial ATA interface disk drives are designed for easy installation. It is not necessary to set any jumpers, terminators, or other settings on this drive for proper operation. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 150MB/s drives is for factory use only. The jumper block adjacent to the SATA interface connector on SATA 300MB/s drives can be used to force the drive into SATA 150MB/s mode for use with older SATA controllers that only work with SATA 150MB/s drives.

With a Serial ATA interface, each disk drive has its own cable that connects directly to a Serial ATA host adapter or a Serial ATA port on your motherboard. Unlike Parallel ATA, there is no master-slave relationship between drives that use a Serial ATA interface.

You can use a Serial ATA drive in the same system with Parallel ATA drives as long as both interfaces are supported on the motherboard or with a host adapter. This makes it easy to add Serial ATA compatibility to your existing system without removing existing Parallel ATA disk drives.

felix8406 will become famous soon enough

The easiest way is to download the software from Seagate to setup your hard drive. Their software is designed for that purpose. Go to http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/.
