RestoreWiz, FPW extensions, HP

I've seen this problem on many vista forums and no one has an answer. I had to restore my HP computer to it's original factory settings. I backed up all my files to my external hard drive. But now that I'm trying to recover my files, they are in .fpw format. When I run HP's RestoreWiz application, it won't recognize the backup files. The application to recover the files is called RestoreWiz. When you open it, it says, "the file restore wizard helps you restore files that you backed up earlier". You click next and the next screen says, "Please insert the latest disk and continue the restore wizard." It seems like by default it looks to you CD Drive and you can't switch it to look to your external hard drive. I've also copied all the .fpw files straight to my internal hard drive and it still won't recognize them there.

Does anyone know how this RestoreWiz application is suppose to work?

Many people on other forums have had issues too, but no answers.

PLEASE HELP. My wife is freaking out because it's her computer.

Have you thought of putting the files on a disk? And then restoring off that?

Im not sure, but I have found this usually works.... find you file.
mybackup.fpw --> right click and use open with --> browse to the restorewiz.exe
and say yes... you can also set this to be the DEFAULT opener..

Nothing Yet

I've tried all these suggestions before. Nothing has worked. Thanks for your response. Someone on another post is having the same problem and had was suppose to talk with both Microsoft and HP last night. Hopefully they found a solution. I'll let you know.

Thanks

open CMD and rename the "backup.fpw" to backup.img then close and try to open with poweriso... or ultraiso.

Sorry, but I have no idea what poweriso or ultraiso are or what they do.
