Well, I tried clean install (Vista) too and the installer doesn't let me shrink the partition at all (I used diskpart from a command line using Shift+F10).

Just use a win98 or xp startup disk and use fdisk. As long as each of the partitions has a valid format you can then reformat them in Vista. You can get these start up disks for free online.

It all else fail, you can go to your HD manufacture and download their formatting application. You should be able to download it for free.

But how can a tool meant to work on FAT32 partitions modify Vista partitions correctly? (AFAIK, Vista uses a diff version of NTFS if not plain simple NTFS).
Reason: the OLD NTFS format system was "SIMPLE" or "BASIC". It works perfect with VISTA and about 35X faster than DYNAMIC NTFS Format.

NTFS is not new to Vista, or XP it has been around for some time...
late post but I have been converting all my VISTA DYNAMIC HDD's to SIMPLE BASIC NTFS system... and using CMD (IMHO) is so much faster then Vista GUI. and I also like cmd - xcopy source destination\path /E which (IMHO) is also much faster than Vista GUI copy/paste/move to/copy to.
Gads I do LOVE MY DOS
