| Hmmmm..... interesting. Have you had another operating system on this PC or is it as new as you say? If you have just built it I am starting to think you may have pinned your motherboard incorrectly or may even have a short. If you did build it yourself... just take everything out and put it back in If the shutdown command works as the start menu does then it isnt an operating system issue. crabby |

| And, as crabby mentioned earlier, you might want to try a repair install before taking your machine apart. Finally, why shut down until you become desperate? I almost never do. But, restart will need to work (or shut down will need to work like restart--as it apparently does) so you can install updates, new programs, etc.

| Maybe you could just turn all power options off? theres lots for powering down devices when there not in use i guess this could cause some problems with network cards.

I have tried all of your suggestions without success. The machine was purchased brand new with Vista the only OS. I seldom switch off to enable updates to the Anti virus software as well as scanning. I think I will just forget this problem and when required pull the power cord out when the computer shuts down for that short period. Thanks a stack all of you for showing so much interest. This Forum is excellent. Other forums I have tried have no replies. |

| You are very welcome. And, yes, to heck with shutting down if everything else is good. You should be able call support since your computer is a new as it is.

| Still, the shutdown issue if not corrected can lead to other issues as well. Unplugging a computer is not a friendly thing to do to a CPU. You should try to correct the problem now rather than when your system is full of newer applications. One thing, did you have this issue when you first purchased and tried the PC or did it happen after? If it did happened after a few weeks, there's a possibility that a program you installed may be the culprit? If you have a time frame of when the issue developed, you can try to restore your system back before that time frame. Another thing you may want to try is a repair install. Start the PC > Insert your Vista DVD > Run Setup > Select the 'Upgrade' option > Select the Vista version you are using > Follow the instructions |

| He says he tried a repair install--or at least that he tried all of our suggestions to this point. My impression is that the problem began out of the box, but I am not positive. True, its not great to pull the plug unless he has a decent period of time until the restart begins. At least he shouldn't have to do it very often, I hope.
