| Hi, which button are you using to shut down! I don't me to be rude but i was using the wrong one when i first starting using Vista, which was the first one you see, but it should be the the arrow which then gives you various options! Sorry if you are already using this option. |

| Seems you have tried everything and still not working.. I'm sure you know the start icon and when you click it and move over to shutdown that your doing that right... if for some crazy reason you have a CROSS LINKED file. the best way to fix (imho) is press the restart button (below the on/off button) that send the OS in stop and chcek all files mode.. takes a bit but if it finds cross links it does fix them. If you do not have a RESET button, reach behind the set while running, and pull the power plug, wait 1 min then replug, and restart, the OS should restart in failure to shut down correctly and scan for all crosslinks...sounds like bad info but trust me I have did this millions of time in my own shop, and nearly every Tech who worked for me never was taught this in school. Hope it fixes the problem...

| Dorian - Sounds like all avenues have pretty much been exhausted. I assume that the computer starts back up even if it's disconnected from the network (based on other posts). The one thing that I did not see mentioned was the possibility that there is a software/OS task scheduled to run which "wakes up" the computer to run. The OEM may have installed such an animal to perform a specific task, or you may have unknowingly done the same. I'm not at my computer at the moment (you know the old work to pay the bills routine) so I can't give you the specifics of where to go. But if you go to help and look for scheduling, you may be able to find it yourself. It's worth looking into. |

| But, I wouldn't think that a scheduled task would keep one from shutting down. In this regard, even a running scheduled task should not restart one's comupter given a shut down. And, I would think that a running scheduled task would give a warning that it is running before "allowing" a shut down.

Once again thanks a stack for your interest everyone. I have done a full install as well as doing all the other things suggested with no result. I'm going to accept the problem. That's about all i can do. I installed two DVD's one ROM and the other writer so the manufacturer will blame me for any problems. Rest assured I will remain a loyal membe of the forum and keep perusing threads. Thanks again |

| Well... incase you keep looking for answers... I am now the the impression it is hardware related. It certainly appears that your PC is shutting down. And then being switched back on. Because of these symptoms we can discount peripheral hardware as they can only cause boot from a 'wake' scenario. Therefore I am under the impression the issue is due to a short or some other malfunction. If your case is metallic (which most are! I know the idea of a PC with no case is an odd one... but it will help narrow the search! If you dont want to do anything so drastic, I would try removing the drives you attached first. crabby |

I disconnected both DVDs and all the exterior conections including keyboard and monitor. When the computer switches off and I pull the power cord and later wish to restart the computer starts without a problem(doesn't even suggest Safe Mode). Si I'm going to let things carry on. I never really shut down for antivirus, updates, mail etc. |
