| Are you using Start > Shutdown button? By default that button is set to place PC in Sleep Mode or Low Power Mode. If you are using the shutdown button, the PC goes to the Sleep mode, but if your Ethernet Card is not set correctly, the PC will resume almost immediately. To Shutdown the PC go to Start, click the Arrow to the right of what looks like the Shutdown button and chose Shutdown from the Menu, let's know if that helps. If you are having issues putting your PC to Sleep, let's know so we can help you. |

| Yes sounds like your pressing the power button on the start menu that puts it to sleep. You can change that though hunny so that the power button turns off the PC instead by doing this: Goto your control panel then power options, then click change power plan under which ever plan youve got it on. then click change advanced power settings and youll see a window popup then scroll down onto power buttons and lid and change the button settings to whatever you prefer. Hope that helped you xxx

If you do plan to place your PC in Sleep Mode, you must deal with the issue of your PC restarting though. I previously mentioned that it could be caused by the Network Card...and it's possible, but it could also be caused by a program which is set to automatically access the Internet or Server...like an email program. Try exiting your email application or any other application that gets automatic access to the Internet before putting your PC to Sleep. |

Thank you for your advice all of you. I also had problems with sleep mode in that the computer started its fans at a fast rate which did not stop. It would also not wake up. So I changed the button to swith off. You mention the Ethernet card. Is there a way to check this aspect? BTW I have removed the tick for restart if a problem occurs with no result. My BIOS is July 2006 perhaps there is an update but I'm afraid to try an update because we once did so on my old machine and the whole thing bombed out. |

| You are very welcome. Sometimes Vista machines have wake-up problems when connected to a firewire external device. I quit sleeping my desktop for this reason. I am betting that your auto-start problem is not connected with other programs requiring intermitent internet access because, for one thing, you are shutting your computer down not sleeping it--assuming that what you say in your first post is accurate. You could disconnect from the internet though and see if your auto-start problem remains. Your bios is not too likely to be the problem, IMO. However, if your manufacturer has an update for you, then I probably would install it--after checking out what I say below. Note the second possibility in the thread I linked--an incompatible program. Certain versions of Nero cause Vista problems. Are you using Nero? If so, then search on Nero to find out which version(s) causes problems. If you are using a problem version, then try uninstalling it. And, you could try the same procedure for any program installed after your problem began--assuming it did not begin until relatively recently.

| In the command prompt type: shutdown -s See if that shuts the computer down. Here is a link to the shutdown commands available: http://www.computerhope.com/shutdown.htm You can also type 'shutdown' to see a list of available commands. If the command works then the issue is to do with your shutdown executables. This should be repaired in a repair install or full reinstall of Vista. crabby |
