Why the heck does it take so long for Vista to shut down? I installed TweakUI, thought it would make it shut down faster by clearing the page file, etc. It doesn't make any difference! Is there anything else I could do to make it shut down any quicker? |

| Well... my shutdown is probably as fast as XP... you may have some programs that are taking a while to close. A good example would be any download utilities, defrag or virus scan utilities... basically anything that is active as you press that shutdown button A good way to decrease shutdown time is to decrease the amount of time Vista waits on programs to quit. It is a registry edit per this post: http://www.vistababble.com/forums/vi...-shutdown.html Give it a shot and post back if you want some more suggestions! crabby |

| I have to agree that Shutdown in Vista is much faster than XP.. Exception to this is when I install a program... then it takes a while to shutdown..and try installing 3 programs WOW is takes forever to shutdown.. (Have you ever wondered why? In the old days, every program installed = reboot.. it really does make it faster...Try it..). this also speeds up start and shutdown..(my average time is shutdown = 45s, start = 1m6s)

| Sorry, didn't explain that well..what I meant was it takes a couple of seconds for the shutdown screen to appear but after that its takes like 5 minutes to actually get the machine to shutdown...I don't get why. |

| Hmmmm... in that case it may be a driver issue (as windows trys to 'shutdown' the hardware piece by piece) try updating some of them crabby |

can you name them...every program you have running has to be shutdown, and if you have a DEFRAG running... well it might take 5 min to get to a point where it can shutdown... a list of running programs would really help..

| When I shutdown I have running: - AVG Free Edition - Windows Sidebar - Launch Manager (bundled with my Acer laptop) That's all. I've just had a look at the Event Viewer in the Performance section as felix said and there is about 1,300 errors, warnings and critical events. I'm guessing no one else has got this amount? ![]() |
