The slowness!!! :(

Hi all

I think we are all of the impression that the beta is on its way to stability... it has some bugs but bugs gets sorted out so no biggy right now??

Personally my vista install runs fantastically smooth... fine, I have some driver issues etc but all in all its good!!

The question I have is will Mircosoft fix things which ARENT a bug but ARE buggy??

EXAMPLE:

1.) Aero runs fantastically for me when doing anything native non CPU intensive, however, when installing other programs do you find it slows down? This includes media player so that the video halts (sound continues) then catches up? To me this is a big issue as it raises the point that Aero REQUIRES the CPU but in my eyes should primarily be based on board my graphics card. Does anyone know what reasources Aero uses and why it, unlike opengl linux windows managers, needs the CPU so much?

2.) Full screen Media Player AND Media Center (in xp also) are SOLO programs!!! I run multiple screens and so if I fullscreen a video on one then go to use the other it automatically reverts my video which frankly is crap. No such problem using VLC under Vista so I presume its a fault of the accelerated nature of the new media players.

Niether of these things are bugs but if they remain will forgo the option of buying Vista for me.

I find that it loads/shuts down slower than XP pro use to, I also have a problem with all the pop-up security alerts, and my wireless networking, it seems like I have to go through a whole 10 step process for the same network, this happens anytime I re-boot the computer (basicly after every update)

Otherwise I think it is a lot "prettier" LOL

Your second problem (network security) is a remnant of the beta. In newer builds it asks the first time it detects a network then it just remembers the seting but allows you to change it if needed.

I REALLY HATE THE MEDIA PLAYERS!!!! How many of you actually use 2 screen though ?

Networking has been a problem here also; do I blame the Router, Vista Beta,
or program incombality? I'm using an older D-Link Wireless; their "Support" won't help-can't blame them-mention Vistra-end of "Support". I'm thinking a newer Linksys may prevent all these disconnects I'm having, the new models are more powerful than my DI-784 - which maybe is not to blame. Any ideas?

My computer won't run the Aero glitz. And, it is as fast or faster than under XP pro with one exception. After a restart, it takes "forever" before my programs will open quickly. I am not sure about you, crabby, but some are not going to be happy with their performance unless they turn off the glitz. And, for others, if you have not been doing so, then be sure and do the Vista updates that seem pertinent to you. I did them all until I did a couple that slowed my machine down. I did a system restore and ditched them.

I would say the startup issue is a BUG. If you check your performance whilst the software loads it usually is doing nothing for most of it and then suddenly everything appears and the CPU is used for about 5 seconds. This will be sorted in later windows updates and once the software we use is vista native.

My issues I believe cant be classed as bugs. They are remenants of coding which, in my eyes, will be left unaltered unless we do something NOW!!

My reasoning is...

For example 1) The fact that aero uses the CPU is not the issue. The issue is how the RESOURCES are being utilised. The fact that a graphical windows manager primarily uses the CPU will be kernel related (unless the ATI driver is basically doing nothing) and so unless a genius at microsoft goes back to the drawing board and diverts CPU traffic to the g'card processor, slow down on the accelerated desktop will occur ANY time you intensively use the CPU. I hope it gets sorted. For you to try at home.... open media player and play a vid, open a few explorer windows, if you have the office 2007 beta open a few of them, then grab a cd/dvd and start installing something. Whilst it is installing minimise/maximise stuff, use any aero features you can think of and tell me if its super smooth or not.

For example 2) This wont be considered a BUG because it doesnt effect normal users. However, it is not an issue with VISTA but with media player itself... so could be recoded accordingly, it just wont be high on their priority list!

In microsofts defence, we are still not at release so you never know! AND I get my new build today so you never know!!!

Good luck, znod. And crabby, do you have your birthday listed in your profile? If not, please add it.
