I say "go back" because this computer never had XP on it. I bought a new laptop and it came pre-loaded with this "upgrade" MS likes to call Vista. I can not get my pictures to come up and while I like the look of Vista I am not willing to NOT be able to look at my photo CD's. I don't even know where to begin to get XP on this computer. I have never installed anything like that because all the computers I have had just come pre-loaded. Any help? The Geeksquad at Best Buy couldn't help me with my picture CD problem either. |

| I am unclear on what you mean specifically by not being able to make your pictures come up. Please clarify the context. Gvien what you say, I can vitually guarantee that you/we will solve your picture problem and that you will end up with way fewer woes than moving backwards to XP.

| I understand your frustration, but give us a chance to help you. Can you tell us what happens when you try to view the photos? Do you get any type of error or message? We might be able to help you watch your photos and enjoy Vista at the same time. I don't recommend installing Win XP if you don't have the experience when it comes to installing an OS. Although installing Win XP is very straight forward: 1. Insert the Win XP CD and restart the PC 2. Press any key to boot from CD/DVD when prompted 3. Read the instructions that follows 4. Select to install XP where Windows vista is install 5. Choose to for format the hard drive; Quick format is OK 6. Win XP will walk you through the rest of the process But if you never done it and run into problems, then it can get pretty ugly. I'm not trying to scare you into installing Win XP, but it's a fact that things done always go as plan. Not to mention that including downloading and installing all the updates will take you about two hours. Microsoft has not released SP3, so you must do all the updates a few at a time. Also, you must remember about all the applications and utilities as well that must be installed, e.g. anti-virus, word processors, burning software, PDF reader, and probably a few more software and some drivers. Since you bought a PC with Vista already install, you may not have access to the software. |

"Dollars to doughnuts means 'most certain' or 'most assuredly'. It comes from the idea of betting. Betting a dollar to a half-dollar, for instance, means that you're giving 2 to 1 odds--you're willing to risk a dollar to win only a half-dollar. Being willing to bet dollars against doughnuts (viewed as worthless) means that you're totally confident that you're right, so confident that you'll bet money against nothing. The expression is also found in a number of variants, including dollars to buttons, dollars to dumplings, and dollars to cobwebs, each of these objects being considered worthless. Dollars to doughnuts as an adjectival or adverbial phrase is first found in the late nineteenth century in America. The first explicit reference to betting is not found until the 1920s, in a story by "Ellery Queen"--"I'll bet dollars to doughnuts Field played the stock market or the horses"--but betting is unquestionably the origin of the expression."

| Ok here is what happens... One particular CD that I have half of the pictures show up. The other half, the folders show up but they are empty. When I put the same CD back into my desktop which runs on XP all of the pictures appear. On another CD I put in none of the pictures show up. I place that CD back in my XP system and they are all there. I didn't use anything fancy to burn the CD's. I just uploaded them to My Pictures and clicked, "burn to CD". So I used XP to copy them to a disc and then to burn them. They are all JPEG format. |
