I'm trying to use headphones with mic attached and a webcam that has a built in mic. Can I do that? When I open Yahoo messenger, it won't let me use the headphones/mic, but I haven't tried it with the camera unplugged. It's my mom's computer...new, with vista installed. |

Thanx for the reply. I've done all that and Yahoo messenger still will not recognize either mic for voice chat. I've uninstalled the webcam to see if just the headphones mic will work and still nothing. Maybe I need to configure it in Yahoo? My mom uses the messenger system to talk with her family and likes the headphones. I'll keep working at it. Maybe I should put a sound card in it? |

| You could try using the webcam mic and your speakers for starters. Then, move on to other things. I have found mics sometimes to be hard to get working in Vista. I current have an Iomega Quick Cam (STX as I recall) working properly with mic and my speakers. To test things out, you could try the Skype test-call to London. Maybe crabby would answer.

Found out a few things while searching help. The Labtec Pro webcam software is not compatible with Vista...yet. Labtec is developing new software. The camera works, but evidently not correctly. Also, Yahoo Messenger is having some compatibility issues. We can use the messenger, but cannot enable voice chat. So.....I guess I should have ordered the computer with XP....if that was even possible. Now, we'll have to wait for the new software to come out. Thanks for you help. ![]() |

| Yahoo released a new version a day or so ago which you might try. I am waiting for the Vista only YIM which from what I saw of it looks pretty cool. They do not have a date for release though. http://messenger.yahoo.com/windowsvista.php

For all of your suggestions. The computer recognizes the web-cam mic, as a usb device microphone, and I can configure it. The computer will also recognize the headphones/mic, when selected as the default mic, but you can't have both selected as default mic's. Neither mic worked in Yahoo and I downloaded the 8.1 version. Me thinks the answer will be a separate sound card in addition to the integrated board sound, and the new Vista only version of YIM. I am spreading the word like wildfire around here to beware when buying a new computer! |
