Transferring pictures

I have a very strange problem with transferring pictures from my Canon PowerShot A540 digital camera to my Compaq Presario computer (Computer cam with Vista Home Premium installed). Some of the pictures become distorted after they are transferred. Pictures look fine on the camera. However, when I transfer them some, not all, "may" become distorted. What I mean by distorted is (this is tough to explain, so please see attached picture) the lower half of the picture may be "shifted" to one side, or part of the picture may be either all red or green in color. If I copy the picture again from the camera to the computer and have it over write it, most of the time it will be ok. Sometimes, not. Drivers are updated. Oh, it has the Invidia video card installed also from the the factory.

I already have been in touch with Canon and they are pretty much dumb founded, as I am. I do, however, feel the problem is with Vista. But I do not have a clue as to where to begin to look.

Any help will save the last two remaining hairs I have on my head.

Thanks!

I have just the one card. I really suspect Vista as the problem because I tried downloading the pictures on to a Win XP machine and it works well. I have also tried multiple ways of downloading the pictures, but always have the same problem with "some" of the pictures.

Certainly do appreciate the assistance!

Don't go back to XP that’s the last thing you want to do! Check for updated drivers for your cam, video card and failing that I would ask how old the cam is?

It's an odd problem.

I would check the properties of the file on the camera and compare them to the distorted one. If the bytes are different then you have lost data. This could be an issue with your bios and vista, so try updating the motherboard.

I appreciate all the replies. Here's what I've have done with regards to "attempting" to solve this weird problem. First, here are my specs:

Computer is a Compaq Presario SR5152NX and was purchased new about a year ago and came with Vista Home Premium installed on it.

The camera in question is a Canon PowerShot A540. I bought it new last Christmas as a gift for my wife.

I have 2 gigs of memory; a 200 gig HD with a 150 gig external drive (Western Digital)

1. Updated all drivers
2. Updated the camera software (along with drivers.)
3. Contacted HP (The makers of Compaq Presario) and was told that the problem is with Vista.

4. Contacted Canon and they had me do a few things to test and they came to the conclusion that the problem is with Vista.

Now, with that said, when I first got this computer, I had to do a re-install of Vista because of many problems I had. I do not know (or remember) if I had the problem with the pictures at that time, as I only had the computer a couple of weeks when I did the re-install.

After the re-install, it appeared to have taken care of the "glitches" I was having. With the exception of the occasional problem with a photo or two.

With all the problems I've had with Vista, if I have to re-install it over again (a real pain in the rear, because of having to re-install all programs, etc...) I figure If it comes to that point, I may as well go back to XP Pro. (I have a registered copy of XP Pro)

It seems because this problem is fairly unique ( not many others are having this problem) there is very little help available. Going to Microsoft for help (sorry Microsoft fans) is really more aggravation than what Vista is worth. I know, but it's just my anger filled opinion.

As for updating the bio's on the mother board. I have not done that, as I am clueless as to how to go about it. If I am unsure about something with the computer, I just opt out of doing it.

Having the computer run well is important to me as I am a disabled veteran and I use it to show me who is calling on the phone and I can see if I have email from the other room (yes, shamefully I use Incredimail).

So if anyone has any suggestions, I'm willing to listen... also, I have uploaded a photo of my grand daughter sleeping that will show you how some photo's are being distorted. Please keep in mind that out of, say, 20 or 30 photo's taken at the same time, only 2 or 3 may be distorted in this way.

Again, thank you all for any suggestions...
