hey, I just got a new computer with vista, and I am having problems directly opening any newly installed programs. let me explain.

I can open any Office 2007 file, but none of the actual programs will open when I try to either launch them from the start menu, or from my quick launch.

I also have the same problem when i try to open my CoreldrawX3.

None of the programs that were installed before I updated my Vista.

Any thoughts or ideas on this?

Seems that for some reason you have lots of corruption.
Have you tried to REPAIR - Vista?
Have you ran any SPYWARE programs?
Have you ran any TROJAN removal programs?
What programs if any do you have installed for System protection.
Firewall, AntiViris, MalWare, Spyware, Trojans, etc etc.
What are the SPECs of the New Computer!
What all programs do you have installed?

An easy way to answer lots of the above Questions. Download and Install BELARC, save the file as .txt, open with note pad, remove all the KEYS,
then post the findings.

How did you update Vista?
What method? are you in reference to SP1 or
just normal updates.

I assume that you have Vista Firewall ON.. and the UAC is fully active.
AVAST AV is known to be very good....
The use of Lavasoft Spyware is also very good.... the main thing I see is NETZERO, which allows different SPYWARE-Trojans programs in and it makes them very hard to find..due to how it sets the program.

I also see you forget to remove the KEYS to your programs.. recommend you edit and remove the KEYS...

At this time I see nothing that can cause your problem...other than NetZero.

You may have to copy the location for the application. Right click the application, i.e. word, excel, etc. and notice its location; example: "C:\Program Files\Sun\StarOffice 8\program" (I'm using StartOffice, but should be the same for Office). Now go to windows explorer; Clcik Start > Explore. Right click the application and see if the location is the same. If it isn't, copy that location to the Program's lcation.

Example: Go to Explorer, right click the application and copy its location. Now go to Programs, right click the application and paste the new location next to the Start in box.

Normally you can start check in these areas to make the lnk correct. or make a shortcut and drag to one of these spots.

I still recommend going to the spots that have scanners that look for NetZero spyware stuff.

hey, thanks for the tips. I deleted netzero, even though it wasnt activated in the computer. I live in canada where netzero isn't available. the other thing I did was check the direct link from program files. They all worked perfectly, so i just redid the shortcuts and bing bang boom it worked like a charm....the only thing I really wanna know is WHY!?!? oh well, I will just blame Bill.
