vista desktop issue

I was having a problem with my brand new notebook. Its a gateway and has windows vista. tech support had me reformat it which I did but now when I try to set my background picture tiled or centered it just zooms in on it istead of doing what it is supposed to. Tech support says to do a system recovery but that wont help since I had practically the same stuff as I do now at the recovery point. Any suggestions?

felix8406 will become famous soon enough

Try changing video card resolution. Right click empty space on desktop > Cleck on Personalize > Display settings > Set to higher resolution

Question Do you have Magnifier Set ON

Set the zoom level in Magnifier

Magnifier can display objects on the screen up to sixteen times larger than actual size. Follow these steps to choose the magnification level that you want.

Click to open Magnifier.

In the Scale Factor list, select a level. The zoom level in the Magnifier window will change right away. Adjust the level until it's right for you.

Resize or move the Magnifier window
Choose where Magnifier focuses
Change the appearance of Magnifier

Make sure you have MAGNIFIER OFF.
open help type "zoom" for info. or start --> type magnifier and make sure its off and not hidden.

Basically, from what I understand, your backgrounds are being stretched instead of tiled or centered? It works fine for me from the personalise menu.

I would suggest therefore, that the registry isn't being updated correctly to show the centered or tiled options.

To get this to work search for regedit from the start menu. Open it. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. There, near the bottom, you will find a string called 'WallpaperStyle'. Right click it and select modify. Then changed the value to the desired type below:

0=Centered
1=Tiled
2=Stretched

Once you have changed it to the one you want, restart and it should have worked.

If it doesnt, then post back as I am yet to familiarise myself with the registry entirely so there may be another string we have to change.

Question Are these Wallpapers Original or 3d party????

Did you do a restore back prior to when the problem occurred? and System Recovery means using the restore Disk back to original factory settings... (Format and install is what the Recovery Disk does). There is a difference between system recovery (from Disk or hidden partition) and system restore (restore point set by OS).

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\tilewallpaper
set to 0 = centered.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\wallpaper
where you set the .img you want for wallpaper.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\wallpaperoriginX set to 0
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\wallpaperoriginY set to 0

Wallpaper has thousand of setting... I beleive the above setting are just basic settings...(still shots- no zoom, no pan )
you might check your settings... if they are the same... for centered and X & Y settings then suggest you run SFC /scannow to see if any files are corrupt.

Another question? are these original wallpapers or have you downloaded some others to use? If yes, then I suggest you DELETE them.. and load a standard wallpaper and check... since some 3d party wallpapers are made to ZOOM and or PAN

I was using my own pictures but it doesn't work with the sample pics or any other wallpaper either. I changed the settings you mentioned but on restart it defaults back to the original settings. I'll try the scan now.

I supposedly have no viruses on my computer. But obviously there is a problem with the desktop. Now aside from the problem above there is another issue. I'll start that in another post.

Have you tried running as administrator in command prompt SFC /scannow?

The problem seems to be with the install of Vista so if you can't ge tit to work still, and want it bad enough, you could always do a repair install? It keeps your documents but requires reinstallation of some programs.

also Crabby suggested the same thing. Since two of us have ask.
Have you ran SFC /scannow?
..if you did what is the answer...

It really is best to FIX one problem at a time..

and in reference to:

What Virus checker are you using?
Curious that you seem to have very little faith in it.
I use AVAST (FREE) and recommend it to everybody.

Thanks
