Check what software you have installed. Most of the time you will find its a unsupported peace of software.

Also try upgrading the drivers for your graphics card and any other important devices you might have.

Like Ant stated, it’s probably software related. If you can figure out when the issue began and what transpired at that time, you may be able to deduct which application is causing the issue.

You may want to consider a System Restore to restore your PC to a time where it was working fine. Click Start Button > Type System Restore in the Search Box and follow the steps.

May also suggest creating a restore point before installing any software. This way if something happens, you can always use System Restore to bring your PC back to the previous point.

I would go into the control panel and check to see if there are any problems listed and if so what the solutions might me if it is logging a problem. This might help you with the issue you are having with the system freezing up. How much ram are you using and what programs are open at the time of the freeze. Good Luck

All above suggestions are very good. I might offer that many times Vista makes notes when it fails. these notes are contained in.
start --> "type" event viewer let it open and browse to see any DANGER, caution, warning marks... if you do not understand them but you feel one is important.. you can copy to clipboard then save in notepad... then attach to your post.

Freezing up can have several different meaning... you have a shortness of available memory to perform the next function. check to see if you HD indicator is flashing...
when the system will function again.
Run every FREE Adware program list on VB
Run every FREE Spyware program listed on VB.
Run more than 1 Free TROJAN program listed on VB.
Please run these one at a time and not all at once.
please post back with what you did and the results of ea...
( All did them all does not help us find your problem.. plz be specific.)

Every system I have had in the past 2 weeks to check that FROZE was not froze but full of spyware, malware and trojans... I also could care less that you visit WAREZ sites, use P2P - torrents, limeware, to find your programs...
and if your Moms calls and Says DELETE all the games, etc etc etc . Your Mom is paying the BILL, and all such will be deleted, photos and all.

Thanks

You might also download and install BELARC a FREE program which will tell you and members here the question to many answers on hardware and software.
