Snuffy, I disabled Gadgets long time ago. I have another program called TClock2 which sits in the bottom right of the screen. I did disable that and it had no effect. I also disabled a few other programs that I use. I will disable Media Center now. Thanks for the tip. The Pic I took of Currently Running Programs in Windows Defender is too large to post here. But here is what I have running : Ms. Desktop Windows Manager: 1500 Ms. Internet Explorer: 3768 Ms. Media Center Media Status Aggregator Service: 412 Ms. Media Center Tray Applet: 1700 Ms. Sink to receive asynchronous callbacks from WMI client application:2740 Ms. Task Scheduler Engine: 1568 Ms. Windows Explorer: 1588 Windows Defender: 2792 Windows Internet Explorer: 3796 Avira Workstation: 1676 McAfee Site Advisor:1684 (for IE7 only) DC Loading: 1692 (Desktop Calendar) TClock2: 1716 (Clock Program) Adobe Flash Player Helper: 2812

Felix, I did try that. I uninstalled McAfee Site Advisor but that made no difference. There is something else that happens every so often, I have a PCI Sound card because the onboard sound card in not compatible with Vista and every so often (about once in every 4 ro 5 Startups) I get a little message saying "Installing Device Driver Software" - SB Audigy which is my sound card. While this is happening everything is frozen.

Felix, I tried all that. No good. I bought the Asus Mobo and installed Windows XP. Everything worked fine, no problems and onboard sound worked OK. I then ran the Vista "Upgrade Advisor" software to check if I could install Windows Vista. The program said Yup all OK. However, after installing Windows Vista Home Premium (Upgrade) I noticed there was no sound coming out of the speakers. Device Manager said "This device is working properly" I then downloaded Realtek's latest Vista drivers for the Sound chip (ALC660). The onboard sound worked every now and when it didn't work I noticed Device Manager had loaded the Windows XP drivers for the sound card. I got intouch with Azus and they told me that my Mobo (K8V-VM) is "Not Vista ready" and they will no not be making anymore BIOS updates. So, I disabled the onboard sound in the BIOS and installed a SB Audigy PCI Sound card.

Realtek AL660 Sound is Vista Compatible...in fact the Vista Ac97 Default (WDDM) drivers are AL660... ASUS might not have the correct drivers but MS has... i recommend 1. remove the addin card. 2. delete all sound in reference to control panel -> sound. (so that NO SOUND is shown. reboot and let Vista find/install the (WDDM) Drivers. Quote:
I also would disable Quote:
BIOS version for your MOBO. Which one do you have installed? if it is not v 0803. I recommend you get and install. Quote:

Snuffy, The BIOS I have is version 0902 I have tried Realtek HD Audio Driver version 1.67 right through to version 1.76 The problem I was having is that those drivers would only work once. When I shutdown the computer and restart Windows would load an old HD Audio driver dated 12 June 2006. I have not tried selecting "No Sound" in the Control Panel it was always Ms.Default Sound. I will give it a try. Will also try your other tips and get back to you. Thank for your help.
