| Here is another suggestion that might help. Go to START/CONTROL PANEL/ADMIN TOOLS/SYSTEM CONFIGURATION and choose the boot tab. You will see a "boot log" check box. Check it and restart computer. You will now have a log of all actions during boot. This might assist in why or what is causing your problem.

| Right, I am getting somewhere now. I did a Reinstall (Upgrade) of Windows Vista and this is what I got. The Freeze/Hang problem has gone. All OK. The Sound problem is there but intermittantly and this time Windows has given me a clue as to what is causing the problem. It appears a different version of Realtek Drivers has been installed which contains the following : Realtek AC97 Audio - Event Manager. Realtek HD Audio Sound Effect Manager. Realtek HD Sound Manager. Realtek Voice Manager. There is also Realtek ALCWZRD Everytime Windows loads I get the following error message : "This program has known compatibility issues : Realtek HD Audio Sound Effect Manager. Contact Realtek Semiconductor about upgrades and other possible solutions". I have been in touch with Realtek when I first lost my sound but they wern't very helpful. They told me to update the BIOS which I had done but it did not restore my sound. Windows Defender will not give me the option to disable it. Any ideas ? | Normally you should be able to uninstall via the control panel. You should also be able to under admin tools, services, and stop them from running. Then when you install the correct set of REALTEK Drivers, which should uninstall any remaining bad parts or over write them , correct the problem. Quote:

| I have uninstalled that HD Audio Driver and downloaded Vista driver R1.72 It is a little bit more stable, there is the odd occasion when it will revert back to one of the old (non Vista) drivers but then it will correct itself or I have to reinstall R1.72 But I can live with that for now. Thank you very much for all the help especially your input Snuffy. Have a nice day. |

| I've already said this and apologies if you've tried it but try and increase your power levels in 'power management' - vista seems to eat up more juice, i had all these same problems and increasing the power to high or max solved it instantly. Give it a go. |
