Hi all

Recently I noticed that after Vista loads and displays Destop and Icons etc., it will freeze for about 2 minutes, everything including clock just freezes.

Does anyone have a solution ?.

Here are my specs :
Asus Mobo K8V-VM
CPU 1.8 GHz. AMD Sempron
Memory 1 GB
Monitor: Chome 19" CMV 938A
HDD: 80 GB Seagate
DVD Drive : Lite On
O/S : Windows Vista Home Premium (Upgrade)

Thank you.

I don't think is hardware related, but something to do with an application(s) you installed or came installed with your computer; most like anti-virus or anti-malware. Can you tell us which applications you have installed, also does it happen when connected wireless or through ethernet, or both.

Hi Felix,

I thought it might of been Avast A/V so I uninstalled it and installed Avira Antivir. Same thing.
I'm connected through a Router to my ISP and have two other computers connected to the same router, but they are running Windows XP Home and there is no problem with them.

Other than heaps of Microsoft Windows Updates I havent installed any other program.

I'm not in my Vista PC, but one suggestion is to find out which programs are loading during startup. Try using Windows Defender to check and and disable a program that you may not need to start with Windows, e.g. office, adobe, etc. Except for the anti-virus and some Vista applications, you should be able to load the programs in a need basis from the start menu or a shortcut.

I tried Windows Defender. There were three programs that were marked as "Not Yet Classified". I disabled two and had to uninstall the third, but that did not make any difference. It still Hangs & Freezes.

Felix,

I think I may have found the culprit. In Windows Defender, under Microsoft Corporation, the following programs is listed :

Microsoft Media Center Tray Applet.
Microsoft Userinit Logon Application.
Microsoft Windows Explorer.
Microsoft Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service Configuration Application.
Windows Defender.

I disabled Ms. WMP Network Sharing Service Configuration Application

Restarted the computer, the freeze only lasted for 10 to 15 seconds and then everything was fine.

Just to make sure it was the culprit, I enabled the Ms. WMPNSCFG.EXE and restarted the computer. The freeze lasted about 10 seconds.
So, it seems that this program has some bearing on the freeze/hanging.
How important is Ms. WMPNSCFG.EXE ?
What would happen if I was to permanently disable it ?

Thanks for your help.

I did a little googling and none can say exactly what WMPNSCFG.EXE is, but there are many reported issues. Since you mentioned Windows Media Player, I imagine its purpose is to allow for media sharing, but I don't know for sure.

Question

Microsoft Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service Configuration Application = WMPNSCFG.EXE

I have mine 100% disabled. I do not share anything from my main system to anything on the network... Shareing takes lots of time to "reverify/check every time you boot... or shutdown".

It is a Service and you as ADMIN can disable it..

Unhappy

I thought I had fixed the problem but this morning the computer froze again for 2 minutes after Startup.

So, it seems that bug is still here. Is there any other Microsoft program in my list that could be causing this problem.

Thanks for all your help.

By saying the clock freezes, do you mean in the GADGETS, sidebar?
Have you considered looking into the EVENTS VIEWER and seeing how many
RED ERRORS or Yellow Cautions you have? This could give you a very good idea of what problems you are having.
Can you post a pic of what all you have running. Media Center is a real pain in the BUTT. it also is very time consuming.
