Vista Locks up

Okay, it's been happening since the first builds of Vista. First, it was sound issues, but that went away, but it still does it now. I'm on Pre-RTM and I am not liking the fact that it may do it if I ever buy it. Now, here's the deal:

If I listen to music and browse, fine, but out of the blues, it will lock up with a high pitch sound. The mouse will not move and the only way to resume operations is by reseting it.

Now, that's not all. If I play videos, it will lock up eventually, so with 3D gaming, that recquires DirectX 9 or higher.

Why does it lock up??? I want to use it standalone because it's all stable and stuff, but if it locks up, it kills the fun

Specs:
ASUS P4S800D-X
Intel Pentium 4 HT 3GHZ 800MHZ FSB
1GB RAM DDR400 Dual channel (Currently running 2GB RAM DDR333 dual channel. it will be reverted back to one shortly)
Nvidia Geforce FX5200
160GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9
10.2GB Fujitsu HDD
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 sound card
A 430W Antec PSU
LG GSA-4163B DVD-RAM drive
Afreey 52X CD drive

Sounds like a driver lockup on the sound card. Your sound card isn't yet supported in vista, and doesnt look like it will be in the near future . Here is a list of vista drivers for creative products:

I would suggest removing it and using you onboard ac'97 chip, see if the problem persists. If not you could always fork out for an X-Fi

PS: Sorry I'm not around atm chaps... got a major project on!

Okay. I shall update the sound card, however, if it's that that is causing the trouble,. I have a Forte Media FM801 PCI card for it. X-FI cards is too expensive, but I'll wait.

What version of vista are you running? 32-bit or 64-bit? If you are running 32-bit on a 64-bit proccessor, you could experience some instability and/or loss of function. Vista works best on a dual core proccessor, if you dont have one, you should consider getting one because they are reccomended for use with vista. I reccomend you buying an AMD proccessor because they are much more stable and perfect for 3d graphics. For your sound issue, you should probrably just download a new version of the drivers for it if you didnt already. Hope my tips work!!

You are correct, Vista is geared more towards dual-core processors and a driver update might fix the problem. But with his specs, he shouldn't have any problems running Vista.

If the Motherboard has on board sound, you can remove the Sound Blaster Card and just use the onboard sound. If the problem persists after removing the card, then you have eliminated Sound Blaster as the probable cause. The next step would be to find updates for the motherboard. See if there is a BIOS update; if there's one, you'll have to flash your BIOS.

If you do flash your BIOS, make sure to follow the instructions carefully, step by step. You could end up ruining your motherboard if not careful.
