Vista Sound on DVD

I have a problem in getting sound when playing a DVD, video is present but no Audio. If a music CD is played everything is fine, and also system sounds are good along with playing any music from the My Music folder. Problem in confined to DVD's, any thoughts?

Normally if you get no sound from Video DVD its due to the wrong or no or corrupt codec.. there are many FREE programs which you can use to find what codec was used and if you have it on your system.
I think GSPOT is the best.. simply drag the .ifo or .vob to GSpot and it will tell you..the codec used in the movie and if on your system..

What players are you using?

I would suggest that this is an issue with your speaker configuration. CDs are stereo whereas DVDs are 5.1. Therefore it maybe that Vista is setup to use 5.1 speakers but you only have stereo ones connected. To check this simply right click the speaker icon on the task bar and click output. Highlight your speakers and click configure.

When I right click speaker icon I do not see a selection for output. Clicked on the Playback Devices option, Window titled Sound appears, clicked on Internal Speaker/Headphones choice but Configure button remains grayed out.

Used GSPOT to determine needed CODECS for DVD with these results:
Video Codec - MPEG2 (installed)
Audio Codec - AC3 (installed)
Downloaded and installed new Audio Codec in case installed one was corrupted.
Still do do not have DVD audio.

Yeah, sorry... I am not near a Vista PC. Playback devices is where you want to go. You really should be able to configure the speakers! So the next question is what sound card you have and if it uses 3rd party software to configure itself? If you could post a screenshot of your playback devices section I would appreciate it.

Sound Card is Conexant High Definition Audio, as far as I know no 3rd party.

I know this will sound stupid but have you checked the properties tab also? I am pretty sure I am correct in the belief that it is currently in 5.1 mode. There may also be a way to change the output within media players options. Sorry I can't be of much help atm but I am in Egypt, far from my PC.

Yes, I have checked the properties tab and found no way to change modes. Am using Vista Home Basic. I understand that there is a Speaker Setup Wizard available that is not in this version of Vista. Looks like I am stuck at this point.
