Hi! I know I'm new here, but I'll try to start posting more soon. Up until this morning, Vista's been running pretty fast, and I've had no problems with it really. Normally, the Vista loading bar comes on for a few seconds, then the screen flicks to black for a second before the GUI fades in. However now, after the loading bar, the screen stays black for at least 5 minutes (no exaggeration), and once it fades to the desktop is *extremely* slow. Clicking Start takes almost a minute before the menu shows up. And the same thing happens in Safe mode; it's no faster. I've had a quick search of the forum, but can't find anyone with a similar problem. I'd be really grateful for ideas/suggestions please, I don't want to have to format! I'm running 64 bit Business on an Opteron 170, with 2Gb DDR RAM (currently dual booted in XP). Cheers guys!

Hiya, thanks! No, that's the strange thing, I didn't do any installing or fiddling yesterday before I shut down. When I try to get into Safe mode, it goes so slow it just locks up if I try to open anything such as the Control Panel. Stupidly, I disabled system restore to improve performance/reduce disk usage. Do you think it's worth doing a Repair with the Vista disc?

Well... it is basically your only option, if that doesnt work then I can only think that part of your hardware has had a fit and is trying to drag its half dead body through the processes ![]() The repair doesnt alter your documents, so only installations will have to be carried out again. crabby

Thanks for all your help and support. Weirdly, after being in XP all day, I tried booting into Vista and it's working fine (despite restarting several times this morning and it not working). However I'll be sure to do all these things to try and stop it happening again. And I'll enable system restore! Cheers!

| I'd make sure that Sytem Restore is active in BOTH OS's. Recommend you double check all running programs in ea OS. run total Viris Scan, MAlware and Trojan scanners while in EA OS. Run a very good REGISTERY SCANNER cleaner... Glad you was able to boot in XP and then later to Vista... and Both OS's are in different HD/partitions? Yes, I'm sure you did not make that mistake..of both in the same HD/partition.
