I use registry mechanic, perfect disk, disk cleanup, etc., with good regularity. Also, I get a defacto degrag everytime I copy an image to my machine (which happens with regularly)--at least I think I do. I know I would if I could actually clone. I keep my power settings optimized for performance. I have shut off all unneeded startups as far as I can tell, etc. Generally, my machines are "ready to go," but yes I could try some clean up.

May I ask what your PC specifications are?

But, anyway, things suddenly look good for Vista 5840 in relation to XP Pro. Below are my composite test results. I am going to see if I can figure out an easier way to post the details of my tests and still have them be legible. For now, I see no reason not to set 5840 for best appearance.

XP Pro—278.9
Vista 5840 set for Best Performance—274.2
Vista 5840 set as Vista Thinks Best—268 (2 prior scores—about 230)
Vista 5840 set for Best Appearance—263.6
Here are some of the details, in two pieces, of the above tests--in the order given above.

By the way, have you been reading the (many) comments on the web regarding MS latest Eula on the final version of vista. It concerns benchmarking. A laugh every minute these days from old MS. Its outrageous, they seem to be riding high on an Ego wagon.

I gave it a shot felix. I ran Perfect Disk, Disk Cleanup, and Registry Mechanic. Here are the comparisons.

.................................................. Before Maintenance....After Maintenance
XP Pro............................................... .....278.9
Vista 5840--Best Performance....................274.2.............. .......289.6
Vista 5840--Vista Does What's Best............268.0......................263.5
Vista 5840--Best Appearance.....................263.6.............. .......267.7

OK, so I conclude that maintenance is good. But, I am not sure how good it is. Perfect disk concluded that I should degrag my system files and swap file--which I did. After doing so, my disk was only .3% fragmented. Registry Mechanic corrected a bunch of presumed registry errors--as usual. And, disk clean up deleted a bit more than 2 GB of files--of which 1.99 GB wouldn't have mattered because they were related to hibernation--which I don't use.

Which is better, the higher or lower scale? The reason I ask is because when Vista is set to decide its own performance parameters, the numbers are higher before the maintenance is performed. Is that better or worst?
