Winmedia 11 Player

I have a new Dell desktop......Vista Basic Home Edition. The problem is the constant buffering/dropouts every few seconds when I try to listen to archived or live radio shows.

Even though I have dial-up, I don't have this problem very often with the Toshiba laptop (also Vista).

Thank you in advance to anyone who may help.

All these shows stream? If so it sounds like an issue with the modem used in your laptop. Try updating the drivers for it?

Thank you, Crabby. The laptop Toshiba is fine, it's the new Dell desk pc that gives me this frustrating problem.

I don't do anything "fancy" with Winmedia, just want to listen to some archived radio shows (streamed).

I'll see if Dell has some type of driver that may help......their tech support is no help.

If you give me the model number I'll find the best driver for you.

You see, I believe the issue might be because your modem is not evenly receiving packets and usually this can be rectified by drivers.

Thank you Crabby!!!

Model #DCSLF

Other specs:

Dell Inspiron 530S Desktop

E2160 Processor

3GB Memory (I had two but the tech told me if I bought another GB of memory, it would solve the problem and the pc would "go like a rocket"....it didn't do either.)

250Gb hard drive

Lol @ the tech!!!

Sorry that you got dooped though It's not right to missell like that! All of the speed boost with extra RAM is felt from going from 1GB to 2GB for most normal users.

Here's a link to a driver which was updated in May this year: http://support.euro.dell.com/support...up&file=241814

Hopefully that should sort your problem. But if it doesn't please post back and I'll have a think into other reasons, like configuring MTU etc.

Crabby, I will check out the driver you suggested for the Dell desktop in a day or so. Meanwhile, I'd like your advice on the Toshiba laptop, please. It's a Satellite A135-S2276.

I mentioned in an earlier post that the buffering/dropout problem occurs only occassionally on the laptop when listening to archived shows. However, it does occur frequently when streaming certain programs live.

Do think this may also be a driver problem? What would you suggest?

Thank you so much again!

Live shows are much more notourious for buffering problems as they have much less data which they can use to buffer with.

It could simply be the time of day, the load on the servers etc... If it doesn't happen consistently I would not put it down to a driver issue.

You could try an internet optimizing program. They update some windows settings like MTU etc and have been known to help reduce these problems.

I haven't used one in years... but there are quite a few free ones if you search that well known search engine!
