| Like Snuffy mentioned, don't use your friend's product key. What I suggested is to use his DVD to install Vista Home Premium (upgrade option) using your Product Key. Want to make sure there isn't any misunderstanding.

| That product ID you just mentioned is not going to work; that particular product key is generated by the setup program to identify your PC. In order to run Setup, you need the product key that came with the DVD. Perhaps you can call home and ask someone to read the number to you. It's also located in the registry, but encrypted. If you can’t find it at home or on a label attached to your PC, try the following: Go to http://www.winkeyfinder.com/ and download winkeyfinder and follow the instructions. Winkeyfinder will display the product ID as combination of numbers and letters; five sets of five letters and numbers. Make sure you write the ID exactly as it appears; recheck it because even if one character is entered wrong, the installation will fail. Note that if you purchased your PC with Vista already installed, the ID produced by the program is not going to work because manufactures use a generic key to install Vista.

| Win Key Finder is ok. I prefer the Jellybean Key finder, which finds many different KEYS. It is small and works on Vista, XP, Office and many other programs... check the config list. JellyBean Key finder cfg. Quote:

| This problem I really do not understand.. 1st I used Home Premium upgrade to do my NON Compatible Acer laptop. 2. I did run Vista Advisor and removed everything advisor recommended and also all that advisor said might cause problems... 3. The install went perfect, a little slow for me but it still worked... I then upgraded all XP programs to Vista programs. (those I wanted to install). 4. I have had NO PROBLEMS... but I did read the instructions and follow the instruction letter for letter on what to do and what not to do... as provided by Microsoft.. The version I installed was 100% legit, due to it was a Microsoft DVD. So guys and gals to get assistance that will really help. you need to follow a couple of suggestions. 1. include a full copy of your system spec sheets. (FREE version of BELARC will give you all that is needed). 2. exactly which version of Vista are you installing. MS Disk, or DL disk? 95% of all disk which are burnt are problemic due to being burnt wrong. (Wrong in that you did not burn at the slowest possible speed) I have never had a problem with disks burnt to 2x or 4x. I have encountered many errors and corrupt installs when any speed over 4x was used. 3. did you or did you not use the latest Vistaupgrade advisor? 4. What are you upgrading from XP ? to Vista ? be honest lying or not giving the full info simply makes it harder and takes longer of the folks here to assist. There are many programs which are not compatible and devices which can cause you install to go BAD... 5. use this site to check all your devices. http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Default.aspx?m=v If you device is not compatible recommend you remove it... 6. Run more than 1 Spyware removal program... 7. Defrag your HD.. 8. taken all the above measures might waste some time for you... but it might save you many many hours or I HATE VISTA when it is your problem not Vista..
