Exclamation WMP11 wont play any media files

well i turned on my vista equipped laptop and tried playing a music file (or any media file like .avi .mp3 i just found out) and this message said:

"WMP can not access the file. The File might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy servers might not be correct."

it was working just fine yesterday. things i tried: restarting, uninstalling itunes, ended all processes related to music, tried playin it w/ winamp and itunes.. doesnt work. now im completely stumped. please help thanks.

Make sure you OWN the folder that the files reside in.

well first i thought the mp3s and avis in my "downloads" folder (which im sure is mine, not shared or anything) isnt working, but i realize it doesnt matter what folder it's in, because any mp3 and .avi file doesnt work in any folder.

so its like saying, if i own my computer and all the folders in it, and yes i do :P

Try opening Media Player > Go to the Now Playing tab > Using the drpdown arrow, select More options from the menu > Click the Network tab > Click Configure > Select Use the proxy settings from the web browser.

Unhappy WMP11 problems

Some questions first.
Is this a CLEAN install of Vista?
Is this Retail or OEM?
Do you have any other Media Players installed?
What version of WMP are you using?
What version of Vista are you using?
What Virus checkers are you using?
What Mal-ware program are you using?
What Spyware program are you using?
WMP unless you have all the updates and have scanned for viris, malware, spyware program might simply be crippled... by a corrupt system file.
My Version is 11.0.6000.6344
using the following:
wmp.dll 11.0.6000.6344 wmlaunch.exe 11.0.6000.6324 wmpshell.dll 11.0.6000.6324
wmplayer.exe 11.0.6000.6344 wmpband.dll 11.0.6000.6324 wmpsyncmgr.dll 11.0.6000.6324
wmploc.dll 11.0.6000.6344 wmpcm.dll 11.0.6000.6324 wmpconfig.exe 11.0.6000.6344
wmpps.dll 11.0.6000.6324 mpvis.dll 11.0.6000.6324 wmvcore.dll 11.0.6000.6324
wmpeffects.dll 11.0.6000.6324 wmpdxm.dll 11.0.6000.6324 mf.dll 11.0.6000.6324

This is the latest version using Vista RTM.
If you do not have at least the above mentions files.. then I suggest you REINSTALL WMP11. the latest version and get all WMP updates.
Please report back so I might be able to assist you more.

WMP is an integral component of Vista and though there might be a way to remove it, it could cause issues with the OS. However, you can do an in place (upgrade) installation and that should repair any issues you may have with WMP. Of course, you'll need the Vista DVD to do this.

Home Premium is as good as Ultimate. Vista doesn't have a repair installation like Win XP, but an in-place upgrade fixes many issues. All you need is your original "Product Key", and you can can use your friend's DVD. Start your PC, insert the DVD, select the Upgrade option and enter your Product key when prompted. Vista will do the rest, but you need to be patient, it can take a while for the upgrade to complete.
