I used to have a problem with not having a driver(s) for the "Base Device." It turned out to be the Vista missing drivers for WMD's (Windows Mobile Devices ). I doubt our problems are the same though. By some miracle, are you still able to get Windows Updates?

WMD's MA.

I just had a strange problem..... ive had the side cover on my pc off for.. well... forever! lol and i just decided to put it on to cut down the fan noise in my room... and then!! windows started to stutter and it did this everytime i went anywere near options/settings/view wireless networks stuff!! and it wouldent connect... so i tooke the side cover off again and as if by magic the wireless connected again and windows stoped stuttering...

Then it has to be a ghost...too early for the ghost of Christmas though.
I've have build many computers, never saw or heard this problem before. From how you explained it, it shouldn't be that dificult to troubleshoot, but then again, I'll have to scracth my head. Don't have much of a clue.

Sounds to me like there may be some sort of short that might be happening. metal case touching something... i dunno, but that was just the first thought that popped in my head

In reply to your first issue... do you have any PCI cards installed? Many pieces of hardware have modular compenents which require more than one driver to be installed... therefore this mysterious pci device could simply be PART of one that you think you have installed properly in xp! So reinstall the newest drivers for each PCI card... also, you probably know this, but windows sees many motherboard devices and PCI ones :S this mainly occurs for intergrated peripherals (onboard network, modem, sound) so go to your motherboard manufacturer and they should have a driver pack for all of them.

In regards to the stuttering... it is quite difficult to diagnose Dazzlin could be correct that there is a short, but I would have though more symptoms would be felt (for instance when you turn your pc off the power may flash for a bit, and fans may stutter). I would also question your AERIAL for wireless networking... they really dont like being confined, and so signal may be poor... when signal is poor windows has a hissy fit because it will try OVER and OVER again to connect (hence the stuttering/lag). I would suggest turning the box around 180 degrees, or even moving it closer to the hub to check.

I thought about the possibility of a short, but even though it might be possible, the way Seansmit17 explained it, it doesn’t make sense for a short to cause those symptoms. I was thinking more of a loose PCI card; it could be loose enough to be recognized by the OS when the lid is off, but when the lid is installed, it tighten the PC case, which in turn might cause the PCI card to move as well. That’s the only thing I can think off.

I think he will sort the first problem with the MS page link. The second problem. Is it possible you have a broken link from the stub aerial to the card? This would mean that the components on the card are, themselves, acting as an aerial. When you put the cover on, then it is screened and would then cut down your signal strengh. Unscrew the aerial and have a good look at it. Either way, if that is the problem, fixing it will improve your wireless link.
