Yes, like Znod mentioned, the 'Custom Installation" allows for just the driver to be installed. I just don't see a need for the software and it takes resources that I can use for other applications. An the answer is no, you don't have to uninstall the older driver, the ATI application will remove the older driver before installing the new one. You may want to close any other application, including your antivirus software, before proceeding with the installation. I always do and hardly ever have issues with drivers installation.

I installed 7.3. And, all is perfectly OK. The Catalyst Control Panel now is stable. And, I documented my first improvement, a very small one (about .2%), from a Control Panel adjustment. I simply increased my Standard 3D settings by one notch towards improved performance. Nothing else I do in the direction of increased performance seems to make a difference overall, and increasing the standard settings one more notch seems to accomplish nothing overall. Below are my before and after overall results from PassMark. Incidentally, using Catalyst overclocking does not work well for me. No matter how I set it things go south.

With ReadyBoost/NTSF/7.2:
904.272
904.382
903.518
Avg 904.06

With ReadyBoost/NTFS/7.3/Minor Card Adjustment (no apparent effect on quality):
905.487
905.616
905.784
Avg 905.63

There have been some BSOD for some installs of the new drivers and here is some info for the temp fix.

If you experience the blue screen after installing Catalyst 7.3 drivers and rebooting (the system usually blue screens right after a reboot), go into safe mode. Then:

1. Invoke the RUN command (either by clicking Start and Run, if you have Run enabled in the Start Menu, or by holding the Windows key and pressing R).
2. Type SERVICES.MSC and hit Enter.
3. Locate the service called ATI External Event Utility
4. Right-click it and select Properties
5. Under Startup type, pull the menu down and select Disabled.
6. Click Apply and OK.
7. Reboot. The computer should start up normally.

This process disables Catalyst Control Center's ability to auto-detect a hot-swapped display. In other words, if you plug in a monitor while the computer is on, the Catalyst software won't detect it. Makedon notes that if this workaround doesn't do the trick, you can simply use the Catalyst 7.2 drivers until AMD posts a fix.

I'm using the Cat 7.3 drivers/CCC as well. I do install them 'the old fashioned way' by first downloading the new drivers, then manually uninstalling the old, rebooting, and then installing the new. I tried doing it without manually uninstalling the old drivers with the 7.2 release and ran into problems such as aero not working, major slow downs, etc. After a system restore, I was able to install the 7.2 package as described above without incident.

I also always disable the ATI External Event Utility after each driver update (as recommended on tweakguides.com).
