| Is there free software in one application or program for vista that does -hard drive restore-recovery-partitioning-imaging. The reason for asking this is to be able to do a system restore from a disk and/or a drive. To be able to have a complete backup for system recovery-image.Partition to put recovery on. I know that some pc have a recovery partition on them.I have deleted mine to make room and have recovery disks. For some reason the vista gods will not let me have a functioning restore . Most apps i have seen are for xp or older and some have alot of hoops to go through. Thanks ![]() |

| Vista does have the ability to make such.. to DVD or HDD but I suggest that you insure "Shadow Copy" is working.. so that you can use "Restore" which I have found works VERY WELL. Find and insure it it TURNED ON --> All programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore ( it works great for me on every thing I have tested it for...even why you can not boot to Vista - boot to DVD use RESTORE - Cmd function with : Quote:

| OK, several programs have been noted to delete the restore points... easy way to assist is DL and install FREE Belarc.. run program save the log as txt file... open and remove all KEYS..(stop the pirates from stealing your KEYS), then either attach the log or link to where we can DL and view... instead of asking bout all the possible this will make things faster.. Are you dual booting? Are you using Kaspersky AV? Are you using CC? Are you using Nortons? Are you using Shreeder? Are you using Eraser.com? This list is SUPER LONG, SO please post the Belard file... for a faster assist. Where is this setting at? increase the amount of space System Restore is allowed to use (My Computer/ Properties/ System Restore and slide the slider to the right). Snuffy

| OK I went to make a backup to d After awhile the backup program said it cannot backup because the backup program is not around. Reading further it says it will not back up to c Now..this is why I was looking for freeware to do this for me but with the option for restore because I have the recovery disks. I will assume this is the reason restore is not working. Is there anyway to add the backup program to d. Thanks |

| Apparently you have a corrupt install... to answer your questions. 1. You can not backup to the same HD that you want to backup.. DOH. 2. otherwise if Vista is on C: then you can not backup to C: but to any other drive on your system... I have use to backup to D, E, F, G, H, or even DVD-RW's.. So either you have a corrupt install, or you simply misread the instructions. you might try SFC /scannow or a repair from the DVD, or both. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have turned off Back/restore then 1. ORB --> all programs --> accessories --> system tools --> backup status and config --> then click TURN ON

| I'll have to agree with Snuffy; it appears you have a few issues with either Vista or your backup software or both. Backups are fine as long as there are no issues with the software. Even if you get the backup to work, when it's time to recover your PC due to a crash or for any other reasons, you are going to have corrupted files or may not even be able to use the backup. Try removing the backup program, it's probably deleting System Restore Points; run Disk Cleanup; Run a register cleaner, you can get one free here: http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_...y_cleaner.htm; and run Disk Defragmenter, then check to see if System Restore is working.

| I use acronis because it is a totally reliable once you have made validated and tested the backup by restoring it You will always be able to restore to this point I keep the original backup with registration details on a DVD to restore even from a blank hard drive all you have to do is boot from the bootable disc you make with the program and run restore you will be back to the point you started at in less than 30 minutes as far as I am concerned its the best thing since sliced bread as we old an's say it does not matter what I do to the computer I can restore to any one of three copies I have the original XP pro , VISTA 32bit, VISTA 64 bit with registration details all saved plus later updates as separate backup files they fill most of 500gig hard drive I have just for this saves hrs upon hrs of work in the 27 years i have now been doing this its the best I have ever found. |
