Hi All: I like Trend Micro's PC-cillin very well. It is unobtrusive and is reputed to tie up less system resources that most. But, alas, one day my trial subscription soon will run out (10/31/06) and I will have to decide whether to buy the program or not (about $50). I wonder if Trend Micro is more on top of Vista viruses than its competitors that also work well (enough) on Vista at least superficially (e.g., avast!). One might think that PC-cillin is ahead of the curve on Vista viruses because MS recommends this program for Vista. Otherwise, what is the connection between MS and Trend Micro--a connection strong enough to induce MS to recommend PC-cillin? If PC-cillin really is ahead of the curve, then it might well be worth $50. And, I could always make a commitment to using it, along with Ad-Aware SE Plus, when Vista is released. Something I can't remember is whether the version of PC-cillin pointed to by MS is a Beta or not. If so, the program does not so indicate. In the back of my mind, I keep thinking that it is a Beta. Any thoughts on these matters? Below is a snip of the results of my latest scan with PC-cillin.

| Znod, if u r running PC-Cillin Internet Security 14, it's a Beta. I can tell u that PC-cillin has been around for a long time. It used to come on the CD's for motherboards, so they should know something about antivirus. However, I don't think you'll be able to buy Internet Security 14 just yet. U can get PC-cillin Internet Security 2006, but I don't know if there r issues with Vista or if it's the same as Security 14. |

| I had thought about the issue you raise--being able to buy given that 14 is a Beta. Given that it is a Beta, maybe I can just download again if it really does expire on 10/31/06. Also, maybe TM is planning to have the non-Beta ready to go by 10/31/06. I haven't found a thing wrong with it.

| There is only 1 reason that Microsoft are endorsing PC-Cillin. Because they are being paid for it!!! crabby |

| I got "No Script" Are you saying that "No Script" is an effective substitute for AV programs that scan both websites and email? Is no script an effective substitute for Ad-Watch Monitoring?

| And you may be right about MS's endorsement.

| I founf this at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/722/. Extra protection for your Firefox: NoScript allows JavaScript, Java and other executable content only for trusted domains of your choice, e.g. your home-banking web site. This whitelist based preemptive blocking approach prevents exploitation of security vulnerabilities (known and even unknown!) with no loss of functionality...Experts do agree: Firefox is really safer with NoScript. |

| Hi crabby: I meant to thank you for recommending No Scripts to me. I like it. So, you appear to be saying that the program will not completely substitute for AV protection--expecially when it comes to nonbrowser-related email. On the other hand, it looks like you are saying that it will completely substitute for Ad-Watch Monitoring and for browser-related email AV protection if you know what you are doing (which I don't always know). And, felix, thanks for mentioning the program too.

| No-script is not an AV so having an AV is still a good idea. However it stops websites from doing things 'behind the scenes'. If you allow a website to use scripts and that website isn't nice then bad things could happen... otherwise He had a comprehensive AV but because he was admin it allowed an inocuous file to enter his pc and spawn viruses. The file itself was undetected but the AV kept killing the viruses and never the spawner crabby |
