I ran Register Cleaner peronnal edition on my Laptop. It supposely found 11698 problems. Of course the personnal version can only fix 20 of them. I don't know if it's compatible with Vista so I wouldn't use it to fix the issue it found. But you can get a detail of each issue and decide what action to take.

| Boy, registry cleaners are an issue to me. When I run Registry Mechanic (RM), I often turn up 300 to 400 errors--even after clean installs and related software installations. I often ponder what to do. Here is what I decided to do. First, I would never, given my avaiable time, to be able to figure out whether I should or should not let RM fix the errors. My presumption is that if allowed to fix, then RM would fix the vast majority of the "problems" it finds correctly. In this regard, having run RM several times, I have never had an ocassion when anything failed to work correctly as far as I could tell. On ocassion, I have taken the follow up step of doing a repair install to increase my confidence that no system files had been deleted. On the other hand, after doing so, I generally end up with 100 or so possibly new RM problems. In sum, I thing that using, for example, RM is safe enough, but that a good practice might be to do a repair install afterwards even though some possibly registry errors will be generated--where none existed before. By, the way felix, you may be able to get into the world record book for most registry errors. ![]()

. AWC: Advanced Windows Care One version is free. AWC Pro is not free. Smartdefrag: is free. It is just out of Beta. . AWC is solid for me and is the first "fix/cleaner" that keeps my system stable and fast. It is the first program of it's kind that I have used that returns my system to a stable and fast state after resume, restart, reset, and off-on reboot. . Good luck... . http://www.IObit.com/ . |

| Yes, thank Y Eye, I'm downloading it also. Register cleaner found 11698 issues. Will find out soon the amount of issues this program will find. Note that I did not repair any of the issues.

| Well, OK, I ran Registry Mechanic on my desktop. It found 51 problems. Then, I ran AWC--which found 231 problems--all but one of which were referred to as a "Useless Event History". I repaired using AWC and ran Registry Mechanic again--which then showed 50 errors. So, as usual, I am left in a quandry about what to use and when, except that presumably AWC does a better job of taking care of useless history events. Registry Mechanic, of course, would fix the remaining 50 problems if I wanted it to. So, maybe one "needs" both Registry Mechanic and AWC--and maybe even some more registry fixers. ![]()

. You have an opportunity to record problems that are caused by running multiple registry changers. How are you going to compare and document any problems and or conflicts generated by running these programs? The reason I ask is because I have tried running multiple cleaners and created conflicts. I did not prepare ahead of time for these conflicts and found that an uninstall and reinstall was required. The conflicts were hangs and black screen crashes. My decision was to run one only because I had no way to document the problems that I had created. The problems created by installed Soundblaster and "media players" in the 1990's is an example. I would suggest documenting each installation not both before you run them installed and active because you may run into "corrupted" files. Be prepared to use a restore point before you begin. If you run into problems try asking for help on the IObit forum. They have been responsive and helpful. .y |

| Another thing is, are the issues detected really problems? I install and ran the program on my desktop and it discovered the same amount of issues as on my laptop. I have RTM on both, business on my laptop and Home Basic on my desktop. The desktop has been running that same edition for a while now, while I just installed Home Basic on me desktop about two weeks ago. Is vista really such a mess...32665 issues?

. How are you going to answer the question, mess? What mess is that? . Could it be "Vista Bloat" ? . dazzlin has posted a thread, Vista SPR (System Performance Rating), which if used before and after changes made by for example AWC (Advanced Windows Care) would provide an opportunity to evaluate SPR, Vista Bloat, and AWC. I do not have Vista installed so until I do I will rely on your experience and advice. .y Last edited by y eye : 02-07-2007 at 09:33 PM. |
