Vista freezes or computer shuts down

Hi All ,Newbie here looking for some help. I have a Gateway computer,507gr,Added Windows Vista premium about 6 months ago,Pentium 4 ,3 ghz,Ati 1300 graphics card added, Creative sound blaster added, 2 gig memory.

It seems lately almost everytime I put a cd or dvd in the optcal drive{Lite-on]
it either locks up or the computer just shuts down.
I just bought a registry program and that did not help,I checked and made sure all the drivers were updated which they were.
Any suggestions would be appreciated Thanks

All Drivers updated as in WHICH WAY.. [WDDM or Beta]
Most problems today are from BETA drivers....I strongly recommend you use the DEFAULT Drivers from Vista if your having PROBLEMS... and I recommend you check with your MOBO manufacture and UPDATE THE LATEST BIOS.
and use the latest FIRMWARE for your CD/DVD device.

felix8406 will become famous soon enough

You can try the following: Right-click Computer and select properties > Click Device Manager > Expand DVD/CD-Rom drives > Right-click the drive and select uninstall > Restart your PC.

Vista should reinstall the hardware once started. Verify it's installed and try inserting a CD or DVD.
