| Go to the Tips section. Enjoy if, and when, you decide to install. The topic in the Tips section should say 5728, not 5628.

I found this article at: http://www.computerworld.com/action/...taxonomyId=125 September 22, 2006 (Computerworld) -- Microsoft today released an interim build of Windows Vista to 100,000 Customer Preview Program (CPP) participants, and made the new build available on TechBeta, TechNet, TAP and MSDN. Microsoft said the new build speeds up the installation and upgrade procedures, so that when you install or upgrade, the process goes more quickly than it did in earlier builds. The release also includes bug fixes and other minor improvements to the "fit and finish" of the operating system, the company said. The build, 5728, is the first public release of a new Vista version since the debut of Release Candidate 1 (RC1) on Sept. 1, which had a version number of 5600. Microsoft does not view this new build as a milestone or major revision and released it primarily to get feedback on the upgrade and installation experience. The new release also includes overall performance enhancements, improved stability and allows users to turn off the start-up music that normally plays when Windows Vista starts. The 100,000 CPP participants who received the newest build were chosen at random. In addition, any member or subscriber to TechBeta, TechNet, TAP and MSDN can download it for free. Microsoft has said Windows Vista will be in the hands of volume license customers by November and available to consumers by the end of January. |

| The download was public, or do you mean the link was available before the public got it? Still, knowledge of the first 100k or the first 100k after the link became public ought to be known by MS. My wife and I both received the letter inviting us to to get RC1 (5600) because we particpated in the first PCC, but as far as I know/have observed no PCC folks got letters for 5728 (i.e., I haven't observed a single case). I am not sure if all those promised 5600 letters by MS received them though.

| According to the article, the 100,000 CPP participants who received the email to try 5728 were chosen at random. On top of that, members or subscriber to TechBeta, TechNet, TAP and MSDN had access to the download as well. So not everyone who participated in the CPP received the email, just 100,000 of them, but subscribers to TechBeta, TechNet, TAP and MSDN have or had access to the download link. But MS would have to know that with that many people using 5728, sooner than later, the download would be posted somewhere for everyone to grab. Why not offer 5728 to general public, instead of 5600 is beyond my comprehension? |

| Yes, I agree about offerring it to the public. I have not heard of a single person that got a 5728 letter on five forums. I suspect that the article should have referred to the 5600 letter.
