| Tonight, the symptoms become worse. I had the Samsung as a secondary drive for data. (thank god I use an external Maxtor for backups). I simply replaced the Maxtor with the Samsung. Guess what?? Thats right, the Samsung made the dreaded click-click noise as I attempted to reinstall vista. Now I have 2 disks to return!! What is wrong with some of these drives!! I will now avoid Maxtor and Samsung HDD's like a disease!! The Samsung was already a replacement for a defective unit!! I'll go for Seagate or WD instead..... |

| Sorry to hear that, but sometimes, the best even have CRAP... If you did not get all the info (data) off... (take the noisy unit, and place in the Freezer for about 20 to 30 min, then reset and copy all the info... I have saved lots of data by using the FREEZER...trick...sometimes it actually cures the complete HD, a few have been used for 3 to 5 yrs, after.. Brass sleves sometimes fail to lubricate, and 20 to 30 mins in the FREEZER will shrink them enough to relube them... strange but it will work... I keep one slave link totally open just for this on my system.. or slip into a USB external case...

| PS=550w All disks SATA II on SATA I Mb. Jumpers on HDD correctly set to SATA I transfer sppeds. All new cables but will get some replacements. Although Seagate bought Maxtor, Maxtor seems to be the "crap" end of the market. Sorry if anyone else uses Maxtor, and I hope you're having better luck than me, but that is how it seems. |

| PS surely is big enough, but I wonder if you remove the SATA I settings, and let the mobo do what it can... and if possible check the heat on the HD's. other wise I see nothing that should cause the CRASH... except the normal bad HD... I use Seagate, Maxtor, WD & IBM.

| Wouldn't hurt to check the power suppy drive voltages to make sure they are stable just in case (for AC ripple as well as DC level). The PS is plenty big, but that doesn't mean that they can't go bad and give you an upstable power output on just your motor line. |

| The thing is, I've had this PSU with other drives previously. No problems. The maxtor is actually a replacement drive as well. Sorry I did not mention this. The previous Maxtor made the same click-click noise. When i took it back to the store I bought it from, the tech support guy checked it over and it had gone bad. May look into a new PSU..... |

| Well I got my HDD's sorted out. I returned the Maxtor. It was tested by the vendor but they could find nothing wrong with it so I took it back and its been running solid so far..... P.S. Got a new motherboard. Only £40. An Asrock 939NF6G-VSTA. Still socket 939 (did not want to invest in new memory AND CPU). Vista seems much more solid than my old board. No crashes, resarts or lack of sound which tempted me back to XP!!! So far, so good. |
