Basic Question -RAM

On any Windows computer is there a way other than opening the computer and looking to find out what type of RAM a particular computer uses?

And how much RAM a desktop computer can take? And maybe the number of slots?

Thank you.

Hi, I keep hearing about BelArc Advisor which is supposed to give detailed system info. I haven't tried it yet but it sounds like what you may be looking for. Here's a link I just found

512 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'J6G2' has 256 MB
Slot 'J6G1' has 256 MB

Thank you. I have Belarc Advisor. Above is all that show up. Looks like 2 slots at 256 each.

But I still cannot determine if I can add more/take out and up RAM or is 512 max for this machine. And then what type of RAM.

I'm no expert, but the some questions are: how old is your computer? Did you mean speed of RAM as in PC2100,3200 etc? type, as in DDR or DDR2? Brand of RAM such as Kingston?
As I said I haven't tried it yet,(before the day is out I will) I'm surprised BelArc didn't give more info. There will be better help available when the experts log on, and the right questions will be asked. Sorry I couldn't help more.
Just tried it out (BelArc) on this system, and it does give speed and type as in DDR2 etc, so I don't know what you mean by type. The year and make of your motherboard would help to determine how many slots and how much RAM it could handle.
All the motherboard data is there in the BelArc report. Brand BIOS version , date etc.

More from Belarc Advisor.

Board: Intel Corporation D845EBG2 AAA83975-206
Serial Number: CF2B230254275
Bus Clock: 100 megahertz
BIOS: Intel Corp. PT84520A.86A.0009.P04.0205291548 05/29/2002

And yes, the information I am looking for is that I can go out and purchase more better RAM. Information needed to purchase correct RAM.

System Memory Features
The Intel® Desktop Board D845EBG2 has two DIMM sockets and support the following memory features:

2.5 V (only) 184-pin DDR SDRAM DIMMs with gold-plated contacts
Unbuffered, unregistered single-sided or double-sided DIMMs
Maximum total system memory: 2 GB; minimum total system memory: 64 MB
200/266 MHz DDR SDRAM DIMMs only
Serial Presence Detect (SPD)
Suspend to RAM
Non-ECC and ECC DIMMs
_____________________________________________

I got above from Intel website.

So what from above do I look for when buying more/better RAM. And I don't understand above that states "Non-ECC and ECC DIMMS". I can use both/either with this motherboard?

felix8406 will become famous soon enough

You have two slots and can install a max. of 1GB RAM on each slot. You can get either the 200 or the 266 MHZ. Your PC will run faster with the 266 as it has a bandwith of 2128 MB/Sec as oppose to the 200 at 1600 MB/Sec. Price wise should be about the same. You'll be looking for DDRAM 266 MHz (PC2100); like the one shown at the link below. You can intermix a 200 and a 266, but if you do, both modules will run at 200.
