Before we buy

I feel I am one of the biggest cynics and pessimists on this forum, regarding Vista. In spite of that, I will probably buy a copy, because I am, in the end, an update "freak". However, I would like to start a thread on why so many are enthusiastic about its imminent release. Keep it friendly - its only for interest. I am in the category of thinking that Vista is somewhat of a "millenium" release, hyped by Ms in desperation against the possibilty of hard Linux and Mac competition, both of which appear to be not forthcoming. I have been in the Beta testing program for about a year now, so have had the chance to watch its rather painful bug hunting process. ow so close to the final release, decision time approaches!
You can see immediately, if you look at MS own comparison tables, that anyone buying the basic version, as a replacement for XP, is wasting cash.
I have not commented on performance -be free to do so. Personally I have only found the Internet useage as possibly being a little faster. Increased security is of no interest to me, I take care of my own. Znod has a thread on these pages in which he has been doing some benchmarking which will also help.
No comment on the "Gadgets". The Web is awash with similar add-ons for XP. MS could so easily have incorporated those via updates or Service packs.

There other reasons to consider when purchasing Vista, including the price you must pay. I found this at http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=195283&cid=15999907

More like:

Windows Vista Ultimate 1 leg 1 arm
Windows Vista Business 1 leg 1 ear
Windows Vista Home Premium 1 arm 3 toes
Windows Vista Home Basic 1 eye 1 ear (you won't be getting Aero anyway)
Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade 1 arm 4 toes
Windows Vista Business Upgrade 1 arm
Windows Vista Home Premium Upgrade 1 ear 3 toes 2 fingers
Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrade 1 eye

All prices include your soul.

Yes. Should I "LOL" or burst into tears (or hide in fear!)

Go ahead and LOL, the other two options won't be of any help at all.

Hi Dave (and all):

Be sure and check out my new tread about my TechNet experiences and installing the real Vista Ultimate. I am getting ready to post my next installment. And, I will be performance testing this version for comparison to my other performance tests once I get it installed on my desktop.
